French novellas:

We will read 2 or 3 short novels (from the Brandon and Pauvre Anne series) which have been created especially for beginning French students.

your grade will be determined by:

-- oral and written quizzes (1-3 times per week), chapter tests and occasional large assignments (abouty 95%)

-- overall effort and participation, including homework completion (about 5%)

homework: Monday through Thursday -- about 10 minutes per day* – memorize any new material learned in class that day and/or review old vocabulary. Most written work will be done in class but is occasionally assigned as homework. *number of minutes needed to practice words varies by student

French magazine(OPTIONAL – but will only be given to those who pay): Allons-y(Let’s Go) is a fun activity-based Scholastic magazine for beginning French students. A yearly subscription includes 6 issues and is available for $10. We will look through samples of Allons-y in class so you can decide if you would like to subscribe. If so, you need to bring $10 to me (cash or check – check made payable to WCI) by Thursday, August 31st. For more information about the magazine, here is a link:

Promotion to high school French 2: Please note that only “A” and “B” students should be promoted to a higher level of French next year. You should do fine if you:

___ catch yourself up very quickly after being absent

GOOD ATTENDANCE is CRUCIAL to your success in this class. If you are absent, you must check my homework page at and/or contact a classmate to find out and learn what you’ve missed. If you are absent for two or more days in a row, please (if possible) do not wait until you return to class to find out what you have missed. We will move through the curriculum at a much faster pace this year than we did last year, so keeping up with the class is especially important in French 1B ! !
