All training sessions in this flyer are aimed at professionals working with individuals on the Autism Spectrum or with Social Communication Difficulties

Lunch & Refreshments

Tea/coffee and biscuits will be provided for breaks free of charge. Course participants are welcome to bring packed lunch.There is a TESCO and a cafe near to Phoenix School.

Schools that access training will receive priority for school visits

CANCELLATION

If you are unable to attend the training, please contact Phoenix School on 020 8980 4740, (ext. 305 or 306). All training needs a minimum of 5 participants to run. If we do not get enough participants, you will be informed that your requested training has been cancelled and we will do our best to offer a place to you on the same course for the next term.

Your POS Outreach teacher can also provide training at your school if desired.

Induction Courses
These courses provide an introduction to a range of topics to support pupils with ASD. It will cover what ASD is, a range of practical strategies to support teaching and learning, and supporting positive behaviour in students with ASD.

  1. Induction Course: Introduction to Autism (Secondary)
Full day induction for staff supporting young people in secondary
schools. This course will be jointly run with Clare Barker, Lead SLT for
secondary support in Tower Hamlets / Thursday 21st September / 9.30am -3pm
  1. Top tips for working with child with autism
Come along and learn some top tips in preparation for the coming
year, including some information about autism, strategies to support
and child with autism, and preparing for a smooth transition / Wednesday 4th October / 9.30am – 12.15pm
  1. Induction course: Students with autism who are working at
academically age-appropriate levels
Full day induction for staff supporting autistic pupils who are verbal
and working at an age-appropriate level academically.
Children who are verbal still can face many challenges at school. / Thursday 5th October / 9.30am -3pm
  1. Workshop for Playtime & Lunchtime Supervisors
Come along to learn about practical strategies to support inclusion of
pupils with ASD at playtime and lunchtime / Friday 6th October / 9.30am – 12.15pm
For all of the below courses, staff should have already attended one of the Induction courses previously.

  1. Workshop on SCERTS Model for children with ASD
This course is aimed at teachers, SENCO’s, managers and a range ofprofessionals who may work with children with ASD, including occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, educational psychologists, etc. The SCERTS model is a comprehensive, educational approach to enhancing communication and social-emotional abilities of children with ASD. SCERTS refers to Social Communication, Emotional Regulation and Transactional Supports. This workshop will explain the key principles of the SCERTS model and how it can be used to assess and plan for children with ASD. It is particularly useful for target-setting. The SCERTS model can be used for children and young people with ASD at all stages of development / Thursday 12th October / 9.30am -3pm
  1. Planning for Students with Autism
This course is aimed at teachers who would like to create an autism – friendly learning environment which will enhance learning for all. This course will include strategies and ideas to foster inclusive practice, and will also cover how support staff can best contribute to teaching and learning / Thursday 19th October / 9.30am -3pm
  1. Play and sensory strategies for pre andnon-verbal children
Learn about how to support pupils with ASD to develop their early
communication and interaction skills including Intensive Interaction,
sensory stories and circle time. This course is aimed at people
working with children who have functional communication difficulties
and differing sensory needs / Thursday 2nd November / 9.30am -3pm
  1. Social & Emotional Development
-Comic Strip Conversations – learn how to use this approach
-Social Stories – learn how to write these and have a go / Wednesday 1stNovember / 9.30am – 12.15pm
  1. Emotional Regulation & Anxiety
Students with autism often experience high levels of anxiety, which might be displayed in unexpected or atypical ways. We will discuss signs of anxiety, emotional dysregulation and how to promote positive emotional wellbeing for all / Thursday 9th November / 9.30am – 12.15pm
  1. Understanding and Managing Challenging Behaviour
Learn about strategies to support pupils with autism who exhibit
unexpected or challenging behaviour / Friday 10th November / 9.30am -3pm
  1. Using Pictures to Communicate
Find out how to introduce pictures as a means of communication for
pupils with ASD. This 1 day course will cover general principles of
communication, and also how to teach a student to exchange a symbol
to ask for something, moving onto using sentences and commenting. / Thursday 7th December / 9.30am -3pm
