Four Year Plan

Your assignment is to develop a four year plan to help navigate your way through your academic program. You should use this exercise to help you prepare for your advising session, which will be around or just after Thanksgiving. Use details from our in class discussion, from the Undergraduate catalog, Schedule of Classes, and information on the College of Life Sciences Web Site ( Use the attached sheet to record your four year plan.

  • If you are a member of College Park Scholars or University Honors Programs, be sure to keep up with program requirements as part of your plan.
  • Completing an average of 15 credits/semester will keep you on target for four year graduation (8 x 15 = 120 credits). The maximum credits you should register for in one semester is 17 - overrides are only granted in unusual circumstances.
  • For Biological Sciences majors, do not plan to take more than two lab/discussion courses per semester. It is not necessary to meet requirements. For CHEM/BCHM majors, this recommendation will vary depending upon the semester.
  • If you are declared as a General Biology major, we should probably discuss the various options of specialization within the Biological Sciences to see if one of these better suits your needs. This may also influence your course planning for the coming semester. If you are planning to change to a specialization, you can record that and prepare your 4 year plan according to the requirements of that specialization.
  • Take courses in sequence – don’t allow for long gaps between courses meant to run in sequence (e.g. MATH, CHEM, PHYS, BIOL).
  • In general, BSCI majors take Physics in their Junior year, and CHEM/BCHM majors take Physics in the Sophomore year.
  • Be sure you have met all pre-requisites before registering for courses. Pre-requisites must be completed prior to registering for the course which requires them. Co-requisites may be taken concurrently.

As a class is placed in a semester block, check it off on the list below. If the requirement was fulfilled with AP credit or by transfer, write AP or TR next to that course name. Remember that you need to earn a C or better in all courses required for your major and you need at least 120 credits to graduate. Use the model 4-year plans available on the LFSC website ( as a guide.
