FALL SEMESTER 2013

PHILIS SMITH MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Each year a scholarship is awarded to a University of Alaska student on the Ketchikan campus in the name of Philis Smith in memory of her work on behalf of Ketchikan students

Philis was an honor student who received special recognition for her high scores from the Oregon State Board of Nursing. Students and education were always high priorities for Philis Smith. After arriving in Ketchikan in 1955, she worked at the first Ketchikan General Hospital and for many years at the Wilson Medical Clinic "doing everything from patient histories and exams to taking x-rays, scheduling appointments and answering the telephone,” all with dedication and compassion.

She began working in public schools in 1967 and was school nurse at ValleyPark and Schoenbar until she retired in 1986. She is remembered by former students and staff for the depth of her caring and her unconditional interest and concern for all students, whether they were academic stars or just barely passing. Somehow she intuitively knew when and how to provide support and encouragement. At Schoenbar she established the human development classes, helped with the outdoor education-survival program and student self-concept enhancement activities.

After retirement Philis remained avidly interested in Ketchikan schools, volunteering for a variety of work until she was diagnosed with cancer. Even then she followed "former students and their children" and stayed in touch with school projects that enhanced students' self-confidence in social, vocational, and academic skills. A close friend wrote, "Philis was first and foremost an advocate of young people, recognizing in all those with whom she came in contact, unique skills and abilities."

In addition, Philis Smith was an avid beachcomber, president of the University Women's Club, member of the Pioneers of Alaska Auxiliary, and member of the Ketchikan Education Association. She was an original board member of Women in Safe Homes, member and chair of the Alaska State Board of Nursing, and member of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary. She remained interested in the Ketchikan campus and was pleased to know that a scholarship in her honor would assist a Ketchikan student in furthering his or her education.
