6 Make accurate and productive use of assessment
7 Manage behaviour effectively to ensure a good and safe learning environment
8 Fulfil wider professional responsibilities
Part 2: Personal and Professional Conduct / Pass / Fail
1 Demonstrate consistently high standards of personal and professional conduct

1. Set high expectations which inspire, motivate and challenge pupils
Key Strengths / Areas for development
XXXXX understands very clearly what constitutes a safe and stimulating environment. He is respectful and approachable yet has high expectations of learners. He models exemplary positive attitudes and values – this was demonstrated at a recent year 10 parents evening when meeting parents. / Continue to watch out for students who need extra challenge or those with less confidence or resilience and try different approaches to ensure they are engaged. Continue to try and develop strategies to stop the ‘over keen’ students dominating discussions.
2. Promote good progress and outcomes by pupils
Key Strengths / Areas for development
XXXXX has monitored learners’ progress to evaluate quickly how well they are learning so that the approach can be changed if necessary. XXXXX routinely creates time for leaners to reflect on their progress making sure that they act on feedback. He has shown an understanding of the need to set independent tasks to assess individuals understanding and has again used assessment to inform his teaching. / Always consider how you can make sure all students make good progress rather than how the class will. This has started to happen but make it more explicit in your planning. As you have seen some of the best learning takes place when they have more independence or some choice in how to demonstrate it.
3. Demonstrate good subject and curriculum knowledge
Key Strengths / Areas for development
XXXXX has demonstrated excellent subject knowledge in his lessons as demonstrated by his explanations and input and his responses to questions raised by the students. Where he has been less confident of his own knowledge or the curriculum expectations he has made sure he has got to grips with it before teaching the subject. He has practised practical work and demonstrations that he has never encountered before in order that he can teach it well and ensure students are safe. XXXXX encourages good articulacy which includes the use of accurate scientific language. / Continue to develop your knowledge of the curriculum and syllabi. Knowing what they learned in previous years and what they will do in future will help you to inform your planning. You have dealt with misconceptions and errors as they have arisen but should start to anticipate them over time. Identify and exploit opportunities to develop learners’ skills in reading and writing.
4. Plan and teach well-structured lessons
Key Strengths / Areas for development
XXXXX has learnt from both his successful and less successful lessons. He has identified the types of activities where some students were not fully challenged and engaged and shown a willingness to try out different approaches to teaching and learning. He teaches lessons that capture the interest of pupils. These have included the use of role play and presentations with year 8, market place with year 7 and spaced learning with year 10. XXXXX has adapted the GCSE lessons for his foundation group and is currently adapting a scheme of work. / Use the challenging targets in weekly reviews to continue to take calculated risks. Continue to try out different approaches and methods. Continue to observe members in the department and make full use of departmental resources. Produce high quality innovative resources to ensure that all pupils make very good progress.
5. Adapt teaching to respond to the strengths and needs of all pupils
Key Strengths / Areas for development
XXXXX has got to know the students he teaches well in terms of personality, confidence and behaviour. Although he is aware of factors that are potential barriers to learning, differentiation so far has mostly been by outcome. XXXXX supports students well in lessons as he realises the need for support, however when time is spent helping individuals, others are not always as challenged as necessary. Minor behaviour problems have been dealt with well. / Plan for those students who may need support and try different methods to support or extend individuals. Choices, peer support, differentiated tasks or groups are some examples
6. Make accurate and productive use of assessment
Key Strengths / Areas for development
XXXXX uses and discusses a wide range of formative and summative assessment strategies in his lessons. He directs questions well and consistently uses ‘no hands up’ to ascertain the knowledge and understanding of the class. He also uses whole class questioning techniques, such as the use of mini whiteboards to assess. Planning relates to the review and monitoring of data from previous learning to secure progress over time. Good examples of this have been demonstrated e.g. when teaching the menstrual cycle he switched method as he realised they were lost and he scaffolded the next lesson well when teaching graphs to year 7 having discovered how little prior knowledge they had. XXXXX has also given specific feedback to students when marking key pieces of work and again adapted his teaching in light of what they had or had not understood. He has accurately assessed and levelled work in year 8. / Consistently use relevant data to set challenging and differentiated targets. Improve awareness of target grades and current attainment at KS4 to confidently and accurately access pupils’ attainment against national benchmarks. Familiarise yourself with past papers so you are aware of the types of questions asked and the expected answers. There will be opportunity to carry out formative and summative assessments at KS 4 shortly and to become involved in coursework.
7. Manage behaviour effectively to ensure a good and safe learning environment
Key Strengths / Areas for development
XXXXX has developed highly effective relationships. He has learnt names quickly, uses praise well and has developed positive relationships with students. He uses a range of highly effective strategies to promote learning. The students are set to task on entry to lessons, expected to listen when appropriate and reprimanded if necessary, however XXXXX is approachable and friendly and on the whole behaviour is good because of the positive atmosphere he creates. He uses rewards and sanctions in a personalised and positive manner. XXXXX expects to manage and deal with behaviour problems himself but also informs relevant staff and is aware of procedures should more serious problems arise. / Continue to try different methods for dealing with any problematic behaviour. Consider why the pupil is misbehaving and talk to other colleagues about how they deal with key individuals. Use IEPs where necessary and note this inclusion in your planning.
8. Fulfil wider professional responsibilities
Key Strengths / Areas for development
XXXXX has worked collaborated with a number of staff in the department. He has been keen to involve himself in national science week and has helped to organise and run activities to support this week. He has been proactive in trying to take on more responsibility with his learning mentor group. He is very receptive to feedback and advice from colleagues and has demonstrated a willingness to act on it.
/ Take responsibility for deploying support staff (you will have to use me as your support staff).
Overall Comment (Subject mentor) – please make it explicit what the trainee needs to do to move their progress forward. This review must reflect the trainee’s attainment rather than effort or intention and should be an accurate record of the progress to date.
XXXXX has established himself well in the department and is popular both with staff and students. He conducts himself in a professional manner at all times. He has researched subject knowledge when needed, using schemes of work and syllabi to set learning objectives for the students. He has trialled practical work and demonstrations to ensure he is confident and that he has considered all safety aspects. He also carries out thorough risk assessments.
XXXXX has developed good relationships with the groups he teaches. He is polite and respectful to students and this has helped to set atmospheres conducive to learning. On the whole students are clear about his expectations and behave well for him. When needed XXXXX has become more firm with individual students that need reprimanding and therefore problems have been resolved quickly.
The students he teaches are making good progress and XXXXX is using continuous assessment techniques well to gage their understanding and inform his teaching. His own lesson evaluations are accurate and when he is aware that better learning could have taken place he is keen to try different tactics to make improvements. When he cannot think of solutions himself he is responsive to feedback and ideas.
XXXXX is aware that planning for differentiation now needs to become more apparent and he should use data and information more to help him to support and challenge individuals and groups.

Overall Comment (Professional mentor)
I am delighted with XXXXX’s progress since he joined us. I have seen him grow in confidence in the way he conducts himself around the school and he has made a valuable contribution to our professional studies sessions. He acts on feedback well and is showing himself to be a reflective practitioner. YYY (SM) makes some valuable comments about areas for XXXXX to consider in the remainder of his placement; I would also recommend he asks to observe colleagues elsewhere in school who he might learn from in these areas. I am confident XXXXX has the makings of an excellent teacher and supportive colleague.

Trainee’s Response -
I am naturally very pleased with this report. It represents and shows evidence of extensive improvement since my last report. Particular highlights include risk taking in lessons. A good example of this was the ‘rock cycle play’, ‘market place mammoths’ and the spaced learning lesson for year 10 triple sciences group. By taking these risks I was able to engage learners more and two target pupils in the year 10 triple sciences group remained behind after the lesson ‘market place mammoths’ and were able to recall the key learning the following lesson.
My learning targets for the remainder of the course are related to adding very clear targeted differentiation tasks in lessons. These tasks should differentiate at a learning level and should support those with any specific learning needs. This should include using support staff effectively.
