Petition to Impeach

We, the undersigned registered voters of Deer Isle, Maine request of the Town Selectmen that the following article be considered by the voters of the town at the next town meeting.

“To see if the Town will authorize the Town Clerk to send letters to Maine’s national Congressional Representatives, to our State Representatives, and to the Office of the Clerk of the U.S. Congress and entered in the U.S. Congressional Journal, conveying that it is resolved by the Town of Deer Isle, Maine that proper proceedings be instituted in the Congress for the investigation of the activities of President George W. Bush and Vice President Richard B. Cheney, to the end that they may be impeached for the following reasons:

--Intentionally misleading Congress and the public regarding the threat from Iraq in order to justify a war against Iraq;

--Ordering the National Security Agency to conduct electronic surveillance of American citizens without seeking warrants from the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court of Review;

--Conspiring to commit the torture of prisoners;

--Ordering indefinite detention without access to legal counsel, without charge, and without opportunity to appear before a civil judicial officer to challenge the detention.

The activities referred to in the petition are of such consequence that they ought to be examined by the House Judiciary Committee and understood by all Americans.
