Job Description
Clinical Midwife Manager 1 - Maternity

Reports to:Clinical Midwife/Nurse Manager 2/Clinical Midwife Manager 3

Responsible to:Director of Midwifery/Nursing

Role Description:The development of midwifery/nursing staff by means of in-service training, orientation of new staff and arranging for the clinical experience and supervision of Midwifery and Nursing Students where this is appropriate. The primary role of the Clinical Midwife Manager 1 (CMM1) Maternity will be one of clinical and professional leadership in the midwifery/nursing team

The post holder will:

  • Take the lead responsibility for clinical and ward management in the absence of the Clinical Midwife Manager 2 (CMM2).
  • Act as a support/mentor to new staff on the ward.
  • Play a central role in maintaining a safe and clean environment for babies, parents, staff and visitors.
  • Encourage evidence-based practice, using a care planning approach to midwifery / nursing care.
  • Collaborate with the Clinical Midwife Manager 2 (CMM2) in preparing, implementing and evaluating service plans for the clinical area.
  • In consultation with Clinical Midwife Manager 2 (CMM2) and other disciplines, implement and assess quality management programmes.
  • Co-operate in managing all resources, including midwifery/nursing and non-midwifery/non-nursing staff within an agreed budget.
  • Monitor the work of all staff on the shift including Maternity Care Attendants and Household Staff and identify with staff where agreed standards are not being met.
  • Reporting condition of mothers and babies to medical staff and, when necessary, to CMM2/CMM3/Assistant Director’s of Midwifery/Nursing.
  • Appropriately delegate aspects of nursing / midwifery care ensuring that the member of staff has the knowledge and authority to undertake the delegated care.
  • Participate in in-service training of staff in the ward.
  • Maintain personal contact with parents and deal with any complaints / concerns within the Freedom of Information regulations.
  • Identify continuing professional development needs of self and other midwifery and nursing staff in the department and advise the CM/NM2 or the CMM3 and Clinical Skills Facilitator / Professional Development Department.
  • Keep appropriate records of both clinical care and other ward issues adhering to Data Protection Regulations.
  • Maintain stores and equipment, and requisition, with due economy, provisions and other supplies and repairs and replacements of equipment.
  • Identify and report according to hospital policy actual and potential risk situations and liaise with appropriate personnel in developing plans to reduce risk.
  • Co-operate with other departments, and where necessary, co-ordinate their activities at ward level.
  • Report absence and return to duty of all ward staff to the Assistant Directors of Midwifery/Nursing in the absence of the CMM2 / CMM3.
  • Attend relevant meetings within the hospital and participate in appropriate committees if requested.
  • Assist the CMM2 / CMM3 in ensuring that all staff have an opportunity to attend in service training and drills e.g. fire, adult resuscitation programme, manual handling, 18 hour breastfeeding etc as are appropriate to the staff grade and the Units needs.
  • Induct new members of staff to their duties and keep appropriate records of the induction.
  • Ensure ward hygiene standards are maintained in line with hospital and national guidelines.
  • Be aware of and comply with the policy on staff responsibility for the protection and welfare of children.
  • Actively contribute, participate and ensure compliance with the key areas identified in the following:
  • Infection prevention and control / decontamination
  • National Quality / Hygiene schemes
  • B.F.H.I.

And all audits deemed necessary by the Rotunda Hospital Management Team.

Each appointment is subject to a hospital contract.

Roster:

Full-time:39 hours per week (average exclusive of meal times)

Annual Leave and Public Holidays:As approved by the Department of Health and Children.

Salaries:As approved by the Department of Health and Children.

Note:

This job description is subject to periodic review in the light of changing circumstances and may include other duties and responsibilities as may be determined by the Director of Midwifery/Nursing.
