Job purpose
The post holder is responsible to the City Receptions Co-ordinator, playing a key role in ensuring the efficient operation of portering services, meeting and greeting visitors, ad- hoc cleaning services and assisting with security and safety issues in the city.
You will be required to undertake daily portering duties to support the full range of activities in the buildings across the City. This will include moving furniture between spaces and setting up rooms in different configurations depending on the nature of each event, as directed by the City Operations team.
You must have an awareness of Health and Safety issues, as well as a thorough, methodical but highly flexible attitude to work that is suited to a busy and fast-paced environment.
This position is primarily located at Manvers Street and Carpenter House, but working flexibly at other City locations as required.

Special conditions
1. Due to the nature of the work, the post-holder will be required to lift and carry a weight of up to approximately 20 kilos (e.g. suitcase).
2. The post is predominantly non-sedentary.
3. A uniform and footwear will be provided and must be worn to comply with standards of appearance requirements. Personal protective equipment (PPE) and training will be provided as appropriate to the post.
4. The post holder will be required to work full-time (36.5 hours per week). This role will usually operate during office hours but will include some evening and weekend working as determined by business needs.
5. It is essential that the post holder owns a valid, full driving licence. Use of a company vehicle for travelling when needed.
6. The post holder will often work unsupervised.
Main duties and responsibilities
A / Portering, Greeting Visitors, Cleaning and General Maintenance
1 / Lead with the setting up of events and activities as directed by the City Operations Team. This will include regularly moving furniture, equipment and materials within and between spaces, plus set-up of furniture in different configurations depending on the nature of each event and take-down following the activity.
2 / Help to move furniture and equipment from and to other buildings in the City, as required and other ad-hoc portering requirements, following manual handling training and guidance.
3 / Assist with building deliveries and collections, including daily collections of library books for return to the Claverton Campus by the Estates team.
4 / Act as the first point of contact and meet and greet visitors at buildings across the City, often working unsupervised in the absence of senior or other reception colleagues. Responsible during these periods for receiving and directing visitors, students and colleagues, as required, ensuring excellent customer service is maintained at all times.
5 / As required, clean communal areas (internal and external) according to a daily/weekly schedule, including corridors, toilet facilities, windows and mirrors. Use a variety of machines, brushes, mops, cloths and dusters as appropriate.
6 / Ensure that all refuse and recycling bins are emptied in the communal areas, with rubbish disposed of correctly and bins cleaned when required.
7 / Keep grounds, bin stores, cleaning areas and spaces clean and tidy at all times, ensuring that cleaning equipment and materials are stored safely.
8 / Resolve minor maintenance issues such as replacing lightbulbs, clearing blockages and reporting anything in need of more major repair or replacement.
9 / Ensure compliance by students of acceptable use in all areas, monitoring spaces to maintain high standards of housekeeping.
B / Security, Health & Safety
10 / Act as Fire Warden as necessary. Respond to fire, lift and intruder alarms.
11 / Assist the Security team with the safety of buildings, their contents, staff, students and other users, being in radio or phone contact as required.
12 / Undertake Health & Safety training as required. This will include manual handling, fire safety awareness, fire warden, infection control and COSHH. Be prepared to undertake further training as needed.
13 / Be familiar and proactive with the department’s environmental standards.
14 / Become a trained first aider and offer basic first aid if and when required.
15 / Respond to customer requests and safety incidents as directed, e.g. incidents requiring clear up and supporting with building close-down procedures.
16 / Take responsibility for patrolling buildings and grounds, checking safety and cleanliness.
C / General
17 / Provide feedback and handover information to the City Receptions Co-ordinator as appropriate.
18 / Maintain polite and good communication with your colleagues, occupiers and visitors at all times. Be prepared to assist visitors by dealing with general enquiries, including providing directions.
19 / Show initiative to anticipate problems arising with daily duties, including cleaning and portering work.
20 / Follow departmental Lost and Left property procedures.
21 / Undertake basic computer tasks, including online training modules and accessing the University’s Employee self-service database to update personal details and book holidays.
As part of the ahs team you may be required to change building or work location across the service at any time as required.
You will be encouraged to actively promote energy saving measures and environmental campaigns by engaging with colleagues and students whilst at the same time minimising your own environmental impact, using resources with minimum waste and increased recycling.
You will from time to time be required to undertake other duties of a similar nature as reasonably required by your line manager.

Qualifications
Driving Licence / 
Good level of numeracy and literacy both in spoken and written English language. / 

Experience and Knowledge
Understanding of basic Health and Safety and (desirable) COSHH requirements, commensurate to the post. /  / 
Previously worked in a physically demanding position and able to demonstrate an appropriate level of fitness.
First aid trained or willingness to train. / 
