Job purpose
To assist both the Chemistry Safety Adviser and the Head of Education in technical and administrative matters (35 hrs)
Key accountabilities/primary responsibilities / % Time /
1.  / Collection and classification of hazardous waste within the Chemistry facility. / 10
2.  / Assessment and appropriate packing and documentation of hazardous waste for off-site disposal in accordance with Chemistry’s hazardous waste policy and procedures. / 10
3.  / Identification, assessment, and processing of hazardous toxic waste, which cannot go into conventional, waste streams; particularly, ecotoxic heavy metal compounds. / 10
4.  / Undertaking chemical sampling, preparation, and analysis to support Chemistry and the Chemistry Safety Adviser in meeting legal obligations. / 15
5.  / Production of media resources producing teaching and training materials to assist in the education of others regarding safe use of facilities, hazardous materials, and improving awareness of health & safety within Chemistry and the Faculty. / 15
6.  / Technical safety support for the Chemistry Foundation year and Outreach programme; preparation of resources and materials as required for the Foundation course and Outreach events. / 25
7.  / Assisting the Chemistry Safety Adviser with routine inspections and audits (including laboratories). / 5
8.  / Any other duties as allocated by the line manager following consultation with the post holder. / 10

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Qualifications, knowledge experience / Relevant NVQ3/HNC/A-level/City and Guilds or equivalent qualification or experience
Experience of practical handling, synthetic preparation and manipulation, and knowledge of laboratory reagents employed in research and teaching or equivalent qualification and experience.
Experience of ‘Good laboratory practice’ and able to demonstrate competency in practical chemistry in a higher education establishment.
Experience with media production; producing teaching and training materials (e.g. video clips for area of expertise, Chemistry).
Ability to use common software and IT packages (e.g. Microsoft Office, ‘BlackBoard’). Familiar with web based systems.
Experience of conducting chemical analysis employing modern analytical techniques. / BSc (Hons) in Chemistry.
Experience of laboratory hazardous waste identification, assessment, and streaming.
Knowledge and experience of appropriate documentation and packing of chemicals for off-site hazardous waste disposal.
Knowledge of HTML and web publishing.
Experience and knowledge of GC & HPLC systems, sampling techniques, and employing standard sampling protocols.
Ability to develop knowledge of chemistry theory and practical activities undertaken at Post-16 (A-level and equivalent) in order to provide technical support and or teaching assistance / Application
