HIGH SCHOOL CHEERLEADER HANDBOOK

2018-19

A.EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVE

All objectives of the cheerleading program are geared to the welfare and educational development of the students of Perrin-Whitt School grades 9-12.

A.To enhance a good healthy environment for the students to work and learn

B.To help each student at Perrin-Whitt School to develop a sense of belonging

C.To enhance good habits, morals, citizenship and sportsmanship in each student at Perrin-Whitt through proper attitude and example

D.To foster better social abilities and attitudes

E.To promote and maintain a spirit of competitiveness and cooperation within the school day

II.GENERAL SELECTION POLICIES

A.Selection

1.Cheerleaders are chosen each year to lead the cheering sections at pep rallies, football games, and basketball games.

2.Cheerleaders are selected based on the following criterion:

a)Faculty Screening
b)Outside judging
c)Sponsor evaluation

3.Scoring is determined by averaging the totals of the criterion.

4.The candidates with the highest scores will become cheerleaders.

5.A natural break will be used to determine the number of cheerleaders. There will be no more than 8 and not less than 5 cheerleaders chosen.

B.ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

1.Candidates must have been enrolled in Perrin-Whitt CISD for a full six weeks period prior to try-outs.

2.Candidates must be passing all classes during the 6-week period prior to try-out, and must be passing all classes at the time of try-outs. Should a cheerleader fail a class of a 6-week period, the cheerleader will become ineligible as stated by the 3-week rule.

3.Candidates must be current 8th through 11th grade students in academic standing to be eligible for the position of cheerleader.

4.Candidates must keep his/her conduct favorable. Unbecoming conduct will rule a student ineligible for this honor. Unbecoming conduct will be determined by the sponsor/principal and will include, but not limited to, any trips to ISS,AEP, etc.

5.Candidates must maintain an attendance record meeting state attendance standards for the entire year prior to election and the entire year as cheerleader. The principal, for just reason may waive this requirement.

6.The candidate cannot be out of Physical Education on a doctor’s permit/parent note at the time of try-outs. If a cheerleader is out of physical education on a doctor’s permit/parent note, she/he must also miss cheerleading practices and games at that time.

7.Should the cheerleader withdraw from cheerleading she/he will not be eligible to return to cheerleading the remainder of the current year or try-out the following year.

8.Candidates must turn in all forms by required date.

C.TRY-OUTS AND JUDGING

1.JUDGES AND JUDGING

Judging for cheerleading will be done by outside judges in a closed session after school.

2.FACULTY SCREENING

Candidates will be screened by their current teachers in leadership and character.

3.PERFORMANCE

Cheerleading candidates will perform 5 jumps, an individual cheer, chant, group dance, and group cheer.

III.POLICIES FOR PARTICIPATION AS A CHEERLEADER

A.HEAD CHEERLEADER

1.The sponsor will determine if there will be a head cheerleader.

2.The head cheerleader is responsible for all practice sessions and the organization of the pep rally planning. The sponsor must approve the practice sessions and pep rally plan.

B.UNIFORMS

1.Only twouniforms for the school year will be allowed. Additional camp outfits will be purchases and may, with sponsor approval, be worn as uniform.

2.Parents are responsible for purchasing all parts of the uniforms. THE COST OF THE UNIFORMS MUST BE PAID IN FULL BEFORE THE CHEERLEADER CAN TAKE THE UNIFORM FROM SCHOOL.

3.This includes camp wear. PARENTS WILL ALSO BE RESPONSIBLE FOR MAKING A $100 DEPOSIT ON THE TOTAL UNIFORM COST AT THE TIME OF THE ORDER.

4.The maximum cost of all parts of the cheerleading uniform, including camp outfits, will not exceed $800.

5.All cheerleaders will attend summer camp which usually runs about $325.

6.Fundraisers are held in the spring and summer to help offset the cost of the uniforms.

C.ATTENDANCE AT PRACTICE

1.A regular practice schedule will be drawn up. No more than on unexcused absence from practice will be allowed. Cheerleaders will notify the sponsorbefore missing any practice in order to be an excused absence. Excessive absences will result in removal from the cheerleading squad.

D.ATTENDANCE AT GAMES

1.Cheerleaders will attend all football games and all home basketball games. Cheerleaders are not required to cheer at basketball games scheduled during a holiday or at tournaments. Cheerleaders will be allowed only one personal absence during football/basketball season. If a cheerleader misses more than two games, excused or unexcused, then it will be determined that they are unable to perform their cheerleading duties and they will be removed from the cheerleading squad.

E.DEMERITS AND DISCIPLINE

1.The cheerleading sponsor will set up a discipline/demerit system to deal with minor infractions throughout the year. The sponsor will go over the discipline system soon after the selection process has been completed.

F.TRAVEL TO GAMES

1.The cheerleaders will travel together and return together as a group. (Exception: A parent may take their child with them if they have completed the paperwork necessary. They must complete the release form and have it filed in the high school office and with sponsor 24 hours before activity.)

2.Cheerleaders must realize that all out-of-town trips are extensions of the school day, therefore all rules and regulations as set forth by the student handbook are to be observed at all times.

3.The cheerleaders will have a faculty sponsor who accompanies them on most out-of-town trips.

G.INSURANCE

1.It is recommended that each cheerleader be covered by adequate accident insurance. Parents may purchase the standard student insurance or show proof of personal insurance before try-outs.

2.The Perrin-Whitt School or employees associated with the cheerleading programs are not liable for any injury or expense resulting from a student participating in the cheerleading program.

IV.REPONSIBLITY AND OBLIGATIONS

A.Being a cheerleader is the desire of a great many students. The cheerleaders are elected each spring. It is the duty of the cheerleaders to lead and mold school spirit at athletic contests.

B.All cheerleaders are expected to maintain conduct beyond all reproach. If there is improper conduct, it will be the discretion of the principal and sponsor as to the immediate dismissal. Such things as smoking, drinking, improper conduct with the opposite sex, bullying, inappropriate use of social media, and other unacceptable actions will not be tolerated.

V.GENERAL POLICIES

A.SUMMER CAMP

1.The cheerleading squad will attend summer camp.

2.Summer Camp- June 18-21 Tarleton State University

B.HOMECOMING ACTIVITIES

1.The sponsor and cheerleaders are responsible for planning and implementing homecoming activities for Perrin-Whitt student body. The JH will assist the Varsity cheerleaders with the Homecoming activities. The principal must approve all plans.

C.CHEERLEADING SPONSOR

1.The principal appoints the cheerleading sponsor.

2.The cheerleader sponsor has full control of the unit at all times.

3.All responsibilities given to the head cheerleader must have approval of the sponsor. All decision made by the head cheerleader must have sponsor approval in advance.

4.The cheerleader sponsor shall secure travel arrangements for the squad to out-of-town games.

DEMERITS AND DEMERIT SYSTEM

  1. Lateness-more than 5 minutes5 points/10 jumps
  2. Not in complete uniform5 points/10 jumps
  3. Unexcused missed practice5 points/20 jumps
  4. Leaving practice early10 points/20 jumps
  5. Unexcused missed game10points/10 jumps
  6. Inappropriate language/body lang.5 points/10 jumps
  7. Not in practice clothes for practice5 points/10 jumps
  8. Talking and carrying on during game5 points/10 jumps
  9. Not taking care of equipment5 points/10 jumps
  10. Not performing duties5 points/10 jumps
  11. Talking back/arguing with sponsor/squad members-TBD by sponsor
  12. Having cell phone on at practice/game5 points/10 jumps
  13. Having food/gum at practice/cheering area5 points/10 jumps
  14. Not returning to field/court at required time5 points/10 jumps
  15. Wearing jewelry5 points/10 jumps

Each cheerleader will start with 100 points. Once you have 35 points, you will be removed from the squad and not be allowed to return for the remainder of the year or try out next year. This also means that any amount that has not been paid on uniforms at this time will be your complete responsibility. The infractions will be documented in the sponsor’s notebook and all jumps must be completed before next event such as a pep rally or game.

VI.PARENTAL PERMISSION AND AGREEMENT OF OFFICE

My son/daughter has permission to try out for cheerleader at Perrin-Whitt School. I will not hold the school liable for any injuries, which could occur during try-outs, or prior practices.

I have read the attached CHEERLEADER HANDBOOK, and I am aware of the obligations and responsibilities of this position.
