Joe Nickolls

Title at Capcom Vancouver:

Studio Director

Responsibilities

Overall studio management, creative direction and vision.

Brief Background of work history prior to Capcom Vancouver and Dead Rising 4:

18 years in the industry including 10 years at Electronic Arts producing FIFA, World Cup, FIFA Street, NHL and other AAA titles.

I’ve worked at Microsoft Vancouver and Radical Entertainment, and 2 years working directly with China as CEO of a mobile publishing company.

I’ve got background in marketing from Polygram/Universal Music.

Brief description of your professional training:

I “fell” into games by pure accident. A chance meeting at a pub with friends turned into a nearly 20 year journey into gaming.

The plan was to start with marketing but that quickly changed into being Producer on NHL Championship 2000, and Simpsons Hit & Run.

I’ve been here ever since!

I graduated from BC Institute of Technology in Radio / Journalism and spent about 8 years on air.

Title at Capcom Vancouver:

Executive Producer,

Dead Rising 4

Responsibilities

Dead Rising 4, production and creative direction.

Brief Background of work history prior to Capcom Vancouver and Dead Rising 4:

25 years in the gaming industry, I have held Art, Animation & Creative Director positions at Electronic Arts, Nintendo and Microsoft, working on many of their biggest titles including Halo 4, FIFA and Metroid Prime.

Brief description of your professional training:

I have always loved video games, and started basic programing classes in 1978 on a Commodore PET. I wasn’t a very good programmer but I exceled in art and design, and went to school for classical animation and graphic design. After graduation, the Dean of my school recommended me for a summer job in a small video game company and that’s where my training really began. I stayed at that company for 5 years, starting with 8 bit games and working my way to 3D.

Title:

Art Director,

Dead Rising 4

Responsibilities:

Helping an incredibly talented group of artists bring Willamette, Frank West, and massive hordes of flannel-wearing zombies to life. (To varying degrees, of course).

Brief Background of work history prior to Capcom Vancouver and Dead Rising 4:

I’ve been making all sorts of games for over 20 years, and for those 2 decades, I’ve fostered a love of the zombie genre, whether in films, games, or TV. Unfortunately, my previous attempts to bring hordes of the undead to baseball or snowboarding games didn’t go over so well. Dead Rising 4 is a dream come true!

Brief description of your professional training:

I started out in games back in the mid 1990’s, when game art was basically cave paintings. Since those early days, I’ve worked at EA on the Triple Play and SSX franchises, at Relic on Company of Heroes and Dawn of War, and a few other studios working on just about every type of game there is. I started out working on interface design, but I loved the process of game development so much I ended up trying my hand at a variety of art roles. Eventually they told me to just stay out of the way and…art direct, or something. Now, I get to work with truly talented artists, and help them bring the world of Dead Rising to life. I’ve had an amazing career so far, and Dead Rising is definitely the most fun, visually amazing game I’ve had the opportunity to work on.
