How to Find Articles Workshop– PROQUEST and GOOGLE SCHOLAR

1) CHECK YOUR ACCOUNT:

  • Logon to the computers using your Access ID and Password.
  • From the Brandywine Campus home page, click on QUICK LINKS, then LIBRARYto connect to the VAIRO LIBRARY home page.
  • In the CHECK YOUR ACCOUNT box on the upper right, click on REQUEST INTERLIBRARY LOAN (ILLiad) and login with your Access ID and Password. If a registration form appears, complete all required fields and click on SUBMIT INFORMATION.

2) SEARCHPROQUEST:for articles inSCHOLARLY & TRADE JOURNALS, MAGAZINES & NEWSPAPERS

  • From the Vairo Library home page, in the SEARCH OUR COLLECTIONS box, click on DATABASES
  • On the Databases By TitleList A-Z, scroll down and click on PROQUEST (multiple databases).
  • In the search form, enter GENETICALLY MODIFIED FOODS and click on SEARCH
  • In the SUGGESTED TOPICS box, note that ProQuest uses: GENETICALLY ALTERED FOODS as a subject heading. Refine your search by clicking on the Genetically Altered Foods in the Suggested Topics box.
  • 3000+ documents are listed under this subject heading. Click on the appropriate tabs to answer the following questions:

How many are SCHOLARLY JOURNAL ARTICLES ______

How many are TRADE PUBLICATION ARTICLES ______

How many are MAGAZINE ARTICLES ______

How many are NEWSPAPER ARTICLES ______

  • Click on the SCHOLARLY JOURNALS tab.

On the first page of articles displayed, what is the number of the first article that is available in FULL TEXT, PDF format? ______Click on the link to display the document.

Go to article #1 and click on GET IT! On the article abstract page, click on GET IT! again. GET IT! includes a link to this article in full text in what database? ______Click on GO to connect to the article full text in the database identified.

  • Go back to the RESULTS list. Scroll down to the ADVANCED SEARCH form and revise your search by clearing the existing search terms and:
  • Type: GREENPEACE in the first search box
  • Select: PUBLICATION TITLE from the drop down menu to the right of GREENPEACE
  • Click on SEARCH
  • Articles from GREENPEACE UPDATEwill be displayed.Go to article #1 and click on GET IT! ; On the article abstract page, click on GET IT! again. GET IT! is unable to provide a full text source, so click on ILLiad to request the article a photocopy of the article. Note how ILLiad completes the photocopy request form for you! (STOP HERE. Do not complete this article request!)

Through ILLiad, the Interlibrary Loan Department will send you free photocopies by electronic desktop delivery. You will be notified by email when a copy is available for you to download online. Plan Ahead! Processing and delivery may take 5-7 days.

3) GOOGLE SCHOLAR (

GOOGLE also indexes the full text of scholarly journal articles through a search engine called “Google Scholar.”

Set the Google Scholar PREFERENCES to show a “GET IT! @ Penn State” link when Google Scholar search results include articles that are free to you through Penn State full text databases.

SET PREFERENCES:

At the Google Scholar home page ( click on the link: "SCHOLAR PREFERENCES."

In the LIBRARY LINKS type: Pennsylvania State University and click on FIND LIBRARY.

When "Pennsylvania State University (Get it! @ Penn State)" appear, place a check in the box preceding it and click on SAVE PREFERENCES.

Now, if the Google Scholar search includes results that are available in Penn State full text databases, a link for "GET IT! @ Penn State" will appear. Click on it and log in with your Penn State ID and Password when prompted in order to display the full text from Penn State subscriptions.
