Pembrokeshire Federation of Angling Coaches

2012 News Letter.

Pembrokeshire Federation Angling Coaches (PFAC) was established in 2008 bringing together coaches from the three disciplines of angling coarse, game and sea under the umbrella of one local group of individuals who wanted to put something back into the sport.

All coaches are accredited with Angling Cymru (AC) and PFAC is quite unique in that it is the only body in Wales that promotes angling across the three disciplines to people of all ages and abilities, mainly in Pembrokeshire. Much of our work is done on a voluntary basis, therefore it is the support that we receive, whether it is financial or practical that has enabled the group to achieve so much.

Firstly our thanks has to go to all our sponsors without whose help and support over the years PFAC could never have got to where it is today and achieved so many of its goals: namely

  • Environment Agency Wales
  • AC
  • Pembrokeshire County Council
  • Llys-Y-Fran Reservoir County Park, Pembrokeshire Piscatorial Association, Pembrokeshire Anglers Association, Puddleduck Fishery, White House Mill Trout Fishery, Pembrokeshire Coarse Fishery at LlynCarfan, Heatherton, Pembroke & District Anglers at Orielton Field Centre, Yet-Y-Gors fishery, Cwm Gof Fishery, and Hayscastle Trout Fishery.

With regard to 2012 and despite the poor weather, fortunately none of our events had to be cancelled. For the first time, we were able to use the log cabin at Treffgarne to host a number of fly tying lessons, all of which were very well attended. This has led to PFAC putting together a comprehensive fly fishing programme to include fly tying that is aimed to be launched in February 2013.

May 2012 - PFAC hosted successful Fly tying sessions at Pembrokeshire Anglers Association’s hut, this was a new venture which proved popular and is something the group now aims to continue.

From June onwards, PFAC was heavily involved with a schools programme that included:

  • Barn Street VC School pupils having regular lessons at Wolfsdale Pitt alongside a number of pupils from St Florence school that attended lessons at Heatherton.

We also held lessons for StepasideCP School at Llyncarfan Fishery.

PEMBROKESHIRE FISH WEEK 2012

At the end of June, Pembrokeshire Fish Week events dominated the diary that included:

  • The first Saturday of Fish Week saw an open day at Treffgarne partnered by Pembrokeshire Anglers Association, PFAC and the Rivers Trust.
  • Sunday 24th June morning and afternoon events at Llys-Y-Fran Reservoir and Country Park with a further evening event on Tuesday 26th June with S4C in attendance and a media representative from abroad.
  • Wednesday 27th June saw us back at Treffgarne Disabled Centre with Pembrokeshire Anglers Association hosting a day for the less abled amongst us and once again this event was extremely well attended.
  • Thursday 28thJune–Huw John hosted the group at Llyn Carfan with a group of fifteen young visitors from London for what turned out to be a very enjoyable event and plenty of fish caught.
  • We also attended a Junior Coarse Fishing Championship at Wolfsdale Pitt; this was for a competition for junior anglers to test their ability against their peer group.
  • Friday 29th June saw us at Puddleduck Fishery with an evening fly fishing event and thankfully the weather did not deter the attendees.
  • Saturday 30th June and it was back at Wolfsdale Pitt, hosted by Pembrokeshire Piscatorial Association for another very successful open day and finally,
  • Sunday 1st July and back on the Fly, atWhiteHouse Mill Trout Fishery for a Learn to Fly Fish day that was also very well attended.

On Tuesday 17 July, PFAC hosted an event for some of Tasker Milward’s pupils, which hopefully will become a regular event. We finished the coaching year by partnering Environment Agency Wales with a coaching session for a group of young people with special needs at Garnffrwd Fishery near Crosshands, where some of the participants with the aid of their coaches caught some specimen trout. A great day for all involved with the successful anglers certainly exhausting their bragging rights!!!.

With new faces joining our coaching group during 2012, PFAC is well placed to have another busy year in 2013 and we look forward to the challenges we may face.

To all of you who have contributed to our efforts, our sincere thanks and Happy New Year.
