ANNOUNCEMENTS:

·  Board Meeting: will be held at the usual spot, AIG, and the usual time, but not on the usual day. It will be on Tuesday, not Wednesday this time.

·  Salvation Army Tag Day: Friday, May 29th at Washington Mall, Reid St. end. Omed Joseph, on behalf of Gilda Furbert, was pleased to fill the last vacancy (thanks, David Thompson), so now all spots are full – thanks folks; be sure to show up on time for your shift!

·  Thank you Letter: was received from Elliott Primary School thanking us for the funds they received from our Fair’s Raffle. They sold the most tickets, and thus received the largest share of the proceeds, so we should really be thanking them also for a job well done!

·  N.Y. Marathon: Fall 2009: ADG Edgar Dill indicated, via Bob Wood and Lisa Wagner, that spots were available for entries, so contact any of these folks if you are up for a run.

·  Windreach Float: this weekend: Sasha Castle would love to see volunteers, even for an hour or two, to help Windreach put the finishing touches on their float for the Monday parade – lots of flowers and greenery to be glued in place. Just show up at Windreach and look for the activity.

·  Dinner on a Tall Ship: is still in the works for June; an e-mail has been sent around for an “expression of interest” – will be one of two days, Friday or Saturday - be sure to respond to Lisa Wagner or Gilda Furbert.

·  Please keep the following dates in mind:

Fri. June 5th President’s Cocktail Party: M et Mme Wood host us chez M et Mme Flath

Tue. June 30th DGE Karl Milde is installed as DG; details: http://www.ridistrict7230.org/dg/installation/

SGT. AT ARMS:

Sgt. at Arms, Charles Jeffers, freshly back from St. Kitts, was back in action and told us of the lady who was getting married for the 4th time. Her first husbands were a Banker, an Actor, a Minister of the Cloth, and now she was about to marry an Undertaker. When asked why, she responded: “one for the money, two for the show, three to get ready and four to go! Late fines went to the usual folks, George Scott and Lisa Wagner. Wheyman Butterfield contributed some real laundered money – it went through his washing machine! Yvette Swan contributed because she was happy to be with us at a PRC meeting – it was great to see you too, Yvette!

TODAY’S SPEAKER

Albrecht Brodhun, Ambassadorial Scholar

Charles Jeffers introduced us to Albrecht Brodhun, an RI Ambassadorial Scholar who has spent the past 10 months studying for a Masters Degree in Law at NYU. He is now on a tour around our District before heading out to a further 8 weeks of seeing the USA.

Albrecht started by thanking Charles and Juneia for hosting him all week, and thanking Gilda Furbert for making all the arrangements for his visit to Bermuda.

This RI Programme is the largest private scholarship in the world with some 1,000 students chosen by Districts through interviews, with RI doing the final selections from all applicants. Students must select 5 universities around the world, then RI decides which one is chosen for them.

In addition to his degree, Albrecht has spent considerable time with Rotarians in New York as well as in Washington; his counselor was Bob Cucinell, PDG. Albrecht was sent on this adventure by the Rotary Club of Munich, although he is from East Germany. Rather than speak to us about the usual things, Octoberfest and similar tourist things, he chose to speak about the East/West Germany reunification. We heard that the reunification issues there were very similar to issues in other areas in the world where segregation once existed then eventually ceased. All in all a very interesting fellow and a very interesting approach to a talk.

Gary Edwards spoke of Albrecht’s visit to City Hall and his meeting with the Mayor, then went on to thank Albrecht for speaking with us today.
