Peek At The Week 10/17-10/21

Reading
  • We continued to work on using the following strategies to figure out tricky words:
  • Check the picture, and think, “What would make sense?”
  • Use what’s happening in the story.
  • Look for a word inside a word.
  • Look through the WHOLE word, part-by-part.
  • Don’t give up! Try something! Take a guess!
  • Reread and ask, “Does this sound right?”
  • Use vowel teams, and ask, “Would a different sound help?”
  • Don’t just SAY the words, figure out what they MEAN too!
  • We continued readingFantastic Mr. Foxby Roald Dahl. We also started another read aloud, from Ready Freddy series, Haunted Hayride by Abby Klein.
  • We worked in our guided reading groups, focusing on story elements, fluency, and figuring out tricky words.
/ Writing
  • We worked on revising our writing using mentor texts. We read Owl Moonby Jane Yolenand studied craft moves she used to make her writing more powerful.
  • We noticed she used senses to name what the character saw, heard, and felt.
  • She also uses comparisons to make her writing more powerful.
  • We also continued to work on revising with intent. We studied a few parts from various mentor texts to determine whether the author was trying to create beautiful images, or to make the reader feel a particular emotion.
  • Next week we will continue to add craft moves to make our writing more powerful.
  • Our K-2 staff developer, Rebecca Cronin will be in our classroom on Monday helping us use mentor text to support our writing.

Math
  • We worked on learning mental math strategies to add and subtract where renaming does not occur.

  • We will continue to explore various mental math strategies next week. We will also start to solve word problems, as well as add/subtract with renaming (carrying/borrowing).

  • Students explored balancing a pencil using counterweights (clothespins) and a wire on a popsicle stick.
