The World Affairs Council of Maine is celebrating its 40th Anniversary! As one who has been a part of the success of the Council, we would like to invite you to a special 40th Anniversary celebration on September 10, 2017, 3:00-5:30PM on Peaks Island, where the organization was first conceptualized by forward thinking people (like you!) who hosted United Nations diplomats and correspondents on the island in the early 1960’s. The Council was officially founded in 1977, with the purpose of promoting understanding of world events and issues, diverse cultures, foreign policy, and international trade. Forty years later, the Council’s programming continues to carry out the original purpose, which is as important as ever given our global connectedness and Maine’s expanding global presence.

The following information will be helpful to you in planning your excursion to Peaks Island and the event at the 5th Maine Regiment Museum.

Peaks Island Transportation Information:

Casco Bay Lines runs frequent ferries to Peaks Island from the Casco Bay Lines Terminal at 45 Commercial Street in Portland. The 2:15PM ferry to Peaks will insure you will have ample time to get to the 5th Regiment Museum by 3PM. A return ferry at 6pm works well post-event. The cost of a round trip ticket on the ferry is $7.70 pp ($3.85 pp for those 65 and older). It’s a 15 minute ride on the ferry to Peaks Island. The following website will give you more info on the Peaks Island Ferry Schedule: www.cascobaylines.com/schedules/peaks-island-schedule/fall/.

The 5th Maine Regiment Museum:

The 5th Regiment Museum is at 45 Seashore Avenue, Peaks Island and is a 10 minute walk from the Peaks Island Ferry Terminal.

Walking Directions: From the Peaks wharf, go straight up the hill and turn right onto Island Avenue. Follow Island Ave as it takes a strong left and continue on until Whitehead Street, where you will turn right (the second paved road off of Island Avenue).
