- BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Following the post election violence, more than 600 people are reported to have been murdered and their livelihood totaling approximately Kshs. 60 Billions destroyed. Most of internally 250,000 displaced survivors of these violence and genocide are living in refugee camps and still traumatized by the skirmishes. For the few who have managed to return to their land, rivalry is high among the fighting communities. Although the government has deployed security personnel to maintain law and order, enmity and tensions are like a time-bomb waiting to explode anytime. This has a potential to worsen the situation, thus leading to more deaths and destruction of property.
In view of the above, there is and there will always be a greater need to develop local capacities of leaders from all communities for purposes of propagating Peace and Reconciliation initiatives among the people, if a lasting peace, security and development are to be sustained.
Clead International is an international Non Governmental Organization-NGO that was registered in June 2006. Its main aim is to build leadership capacities for development amongst stakeholders in Civil Society Organizations [CSOs]-faith groups, women groups, co-operative societies etc. In this proposal, the Organization is seeking support to build leadership for peace and reconciliation as a strategy for healing process.
- TARGET GROUP/BENEFICIARIES
The primary beneficiaries of the project are community leaders especially the young people in five provinces affected by the skirmishes. There will be focus on young people because they have been agents of violence in most affected areas owing to the fact that most of them are unemployed and are likely to participate in violent activities. In addition, young people are able to acquire new skills and knowledge than older people; meaning after project duration, there will be support systems retained to handle future incidences. These vulnerable groups are expected to experience effective and changing transformation through various processes articulated in this proposal.
The people of Kenya battled by issues of tribal rivalry, ethnic tensions and severe trauma will see a ray of hope for new beginning and sustained peaceful co-existence. Our country will indeed benefit from opportunities for reconciliation, renewal, empowerment, rehabilitation in its efforts towards normalcy.
- RATIONALE
The arduous post election skirmishes have impacted negatively in the five provinces. Reports indicate that 250,000 people have been displaced from their settlements and over 600 have lost their lives. Anger and fear is high. Primarily, the clashes have stifled human resource development as education system upon which development trends depend was nearly brought to halt following torching of schools and displacement of teaching personnel.
The social cohesion has weakened due to mistrust and lack of respect for each others’ or communities’ religious beliefs and political convictions, thus threatening people’s effective socio-economic participation and their overall human development.
The targeted community leaders have little or in most cases lack knowledge and skills to steer successful peace and reconciliation efforts. The issue therefore is how to address the threats of violence, because if ignored democratic governance is at risk and will affect communities’ future social, economic and political participation. It is also about how to start building a culture of peace at grassroots levels. Although peace initiatives are being handled at national levels mainly aimed to a political settlement among the key leaders in Orange Democratic Movement [ODM] leaders and the government, this not enough foundation for peace. If Kenya is to move forward from its current stalemate, more peace efforts should go to grassroots, the bottom, where people are, not by the people at the top alone, because the later is not sustainable.
Peace and Reconciliation project seeks to address the impact of skirmishes on people’s lives of beneficiaries by providing rehabilitation, recovery through trauma intervention and empowerment through inculcating skills and knowledge on peace and reconciliation for productive living.
