PC and Internet History / Timeline

Value: Worth 10 of the 50 points for standard INT1

What you should learn:

Basic PC and Windows operating system history.

Some of the People and companies that made computers possible.

Basic timeline of events.

How you will learn it:

Research: Use your favorite search engine on the internet to find information.

Instruction: Your teacher or another student will instruct with mini-lessons periodically.

Peer Instruction: You will teach others about the standard.

How you will show your mastery of the standard:

To demonstrate your mastery:

1) – Answer the following questions or perform the required assignments with enough detail so you can demonstrate your knowledge when asked.

2) – Prepare to be tested by studying the general timeline of events and main players.

3) – Teach a formal mini-lesson with at least two other students in attendance

4) – Submit your Timeline/paragraphs from assignment #1 and the questions and answers from assignment #2. Be prepared for an oral, written or hands-on quiz at the time of submission.

PC History

Basic Instruction: Personal Computers (PC’s) are small, individually used systems that have developed through the following stages. XT, AT, 286, 386, 486, Pentium I – IV. Many individuals and Government agencies were involved. Try using some of these linksor do your own search and check it out

Assignment #1) Develop a timeline and paragraphs with at least 10 major events in the evolution of computers. Draw the timeline in landscape using Microsoft Publisher. Include at least one short (1-2 paragraph) story of interest and a biography of at least one influential person. (a 1-2 paragraph) Include all your references where you got the information and make it all fit on one page.

Internet History

Basic Instruction: The internet is obviously an amazing resource that has developed into a commercial and informational warehouse. The history of the internet is interesting and can give you an appreciation of the fact that nobody owns it or really even regulates it.

Assignment #2) Answer the following questions to get a feel for what and who started the internet. Possible research sites might include:

  1. What were 5 major events in the 50’s and 60’s that made the internet possible?
  1. Name any 3 important events that happened about the same time that MIT students designed the first computer game (Space War)

  1. What year did ARPANET finally span the entire US?
  1. What year was TCP/IP established marking the official start of the Internet?
  1. What is DNS and when was it developed?
  1. What is TCP/IP and how is it important to every user on the internet?
  1. How can the internet work if nobody owns it? (Explain in a short paragraph)
  1. Describe 4 ways that people are using the internet to make money.
