SUBSTANTIVE ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES IN THE DEPARTMENT

1996-1998Chairman, Income Generative Activities (IGA): This entailed managing and use of computers and a fax machine in the department on commercial basis.

1998-2001Department Coordinator, Module II (Parallel) Programme:

As the coordinator of Module II programme, I performed the following duties:

1)Facilitating the initiation of 3 Module II (Parallel) programmes in the department viz. (a) Two Diploma-level programmes; (b) B.A. Programme and (c) M.A. (Sociology) programme with 7 clusters of specialization.

2)Marketing the Department’s Module II programmes to the Kenyan public. This entailed working as the Public Relations Person for the department.

3)Managing the 3 Department’s Module II programmes: This task involved liaising with the Chairman of the Department to (a) identify the respective courses to be taught in a semester, (b) allocating courses identified to the lecturers; (c) preparing lecture and exam timetables for departmental based Module II courses; (d) preparing monthly payment schedules for the lecturers and support staff; (e) monitoring the overall teaching, examination and payment of Module II courses and (f) representing the department at the Faculty Module II Income Generating Activities (IGA) committee.

4)Providing essential information to new and continuing Module II students. This task entailed provision of advisory and counseling services to Module II students especially during the beginning of every semester.

5)Preparing and presenting periodical updates on the progress of Module II programmes in the Department.

2002 -Chairman, Department postgraduate committee. In this capacity, I process all postgraduate applications to the department, provide advisory services to new and continuing M.A. students, allocate supervisors to M.A. students, and monitor the progress of M.A. students in the department.

2)Shauri, Halimu Suleiman. He wrote an M.A. thesis entitled: Health Care Reforms in Kenya: The Performance of the District Health Management Boards in the Coast Province of Kenya. Shauri graduated in 2000 and is currently working as a Tutorial Fellow at Kenyatta University.

3)Mwangi, Mercy Wanjiku. She wrote a thesis entitled The Problem of Domestic Waste and Sludge Disposal in Low-income Urban Residential Areas: The Case of Industrial Area Slums, Viwandani Location, Nairobi. Mwangi graduated in 2001 and is currently a Research Assistant with the National Agency for Campaign Against Drug Abuse (NACADA).

4)Wafula K. Elizabeth. She wrote a Project Paper entitled Women’s Participation in Adult Literacy Programme in Bungoma District of Kenya. Wafula graduated in 2001 and is currently the Director, Department of Adult Education, Kenya.
