UNIT 1: Interior Design Related Careers


Annotation:

This unit contains lessons that explain the role and function of individuals within careers related to interior design furnishings, materials and components. Students will learn the characteristics needed to be successful within the interior design profession. Educational levels, career paths, and the impact they have on the local and global economy will be discussed. Students will discover many careers related to the interior design industry and explore professional organizations associated with them. Students will also gain knowledge through the use of text, Internet sites, video, and teacher/student collaboration.

Students with Disabilities:

For students with disabilities, the instructor should refer to the student's IEP to be sure that the accommodations specified are being provided. Instructors should also familiarize themselves with the provisions of Behavior Intervention Plans that may be part of a student's IEP. LESSON 1: Roles and Functions of Individuals in Interiors and Furnishings Careers

4.Introductory Activity

  • Post the following statement on the board.“Just because I have a degree in Interior Design does not mean I will be successful.”
  • Ask students if they agree or disagree with this statement.
  • Encourage them to give their answers to the group.
  • Ask students to write five characteristics a person should have to be successful in interiors and furnishings careers.
  • List these characteristics on the board.
  • Have student define the vocabulary terms using text books or Internet sites.
  • After students have defined terms, have them discuss their own strengths and weaknesses based on the vocabulary terms.
  • Give the students a copy of the Design Scenario Handout and have them respond to how they would go about rectifying the situation.
  • Review the question posted on the board and see if the students have a better understanding of how the characteristics listed in the vocabulary are essential to being successful as an interior designer.

LESSON 2: Opportunities for Employment in Interior Design

4. Visual Design Profile

  • You will need all types of magazines for this activity. Have students bring magazines from home such as Architectural Digest, Colonial Homes, etc.
  • Give each student the Word Splash activity sheet.
  • After students have briefly reviewed over the word splash they will need to chose and cut out ten pictures from the magazines provided that appeal to them related to words from the word splash.
  • Emphasize to students that there is no right or wrong answer to this assignment. Just have them chose ten pictures that appeal to them.
  • Have students arrange the pictures in a collage on a sheet of poster board.
  • Ask students: As an interior designer, in which of three areas would you be more interested in specializing? Discuss why or why not.

LESSON 3: Employment and Entrepreneurial Endeavors

3. During this lesson, students will learn the basic areas related to interior design.

  • Give students a copy of the Design Specialties Research Handout.
  • Have students follow the directions on the handout about each career.
  • Once students have completed research, have them discuss what sounds interesting to them at this point.
  • Discuss how original skills involving conflict resolution and other skills are important in these different specialties.

  • Why is it important to have a good understanding of the roles and functions involved in interiors and furnishings careers?
  1. Reflecting over the pictures that the students chose from the magazines in lesson 1, students can see that not all designers want to specialize in the same type of design.
  • Explain to students that, as with any career, there are different specialties you can pursue. From what has been discussed as this point, have students discuss what they like most about the field of interior design.
  • Write the following questions on the whiteboard. Have a group discussion about these questions.
  1. What are some specific personal traits and qualities that draw you to the study of interior design?
  2. When you think of design, what do you see yourself actually designing?
  3. Do you see roadblocks or certain challenges in this field?
  4. What specialty do you see yourself working in within the field of interior design?
  • Mention that there are several design specialties that you can peruse. Although you will become familiar with all types of design, you will probably be drawn to and begin to specialize in the ones that you work with the most.
  • Give the students the Specialties ResearchHandout. You will need computer access to complete this project. You may have text books that will also give students information about these career specialties.
  • Students will research information in all the specialties and record information on the project paper. (This project will be continued into the next lesson)

4. Post a map of the world on your in your room. If you can find small copies, give each student a map to view. Have them locate the area in which they live. Ask them the following questions and discuss the answers as a group. Discuss how the Internet has made our global community seem smaller.

  • Where are most of your clothes made?
  • Where do we get fruits and vegetables?
  • How has the student population changed in your school over the past decade?
  • How has the economy changed over the last 20 years?
  • Why is it important to know what is going on around the world?
  • Ask the students how green design can play an important part in interior design?
  • List 3 ways interior design impacts the economy. Turn in for grade.

  • How does culture and society become an important factor in design choices?
  1. Show the students the My Casa is Your Casa PowerPoint.
  • Students need to take notes from the slides and form an outline for further research.
  • Encourage students to ask questions and discuss each PowerPoint slide giving their input about each issue and its importance.
  • Once you have finished, allow students to use textbooks or the Internet to further research the types of housing choices discussed in the PowerPoint.
  • They can also research the websites shown at the end of the slide to see how the websites relate to current issues regarding interior design.

4. Have students list 10 questions from the PowerPoint and conduct research. Use questions to play Interior Design Jeopardy.

  • What would be some differences to consider if you are designing the interior of a New York townhouse verses a condominium on the Florida coast?
  1. Have students watch an episode of “International House Hunters” from HGTV either at home or if you can show it at school. Have students take notes on the following questions:
  1. What were the three choices of houses and what was unique about each?
  2. What was the deciding factor in the home they chose?
  3. What did you think about their final choice?
  4. What house would you have chosen and why?

Then have a class discussion on the notes from the episode.
