Pastry blender/cutter

A kitchen implement consisting of 5 or 6 parallel U-shaped, sturdy steel wires, both ends of which are attached to a wooden handle. It’s used in making pastry dough to cut cold fat (usually butter) into a flour mixture, evenly distributing the tiny pieces of fat without warming them.

Metal spatula

A flattish, rather narrow kitchen utensil that comes in a variety of shapes and sizes. A turner with a think flexible metal blade.

Rubber spatula

A flattish, rather narrow kitchen utensil that comes in a variety of shapes and sizes. Are better for stirring ingredients in a curved bowl and folding mixtures together.

Pastry brush

A small brush used for applying glazes to breads, pastries, cookies, etc. either before or after baking. The best all-purpose size has a width of 1 to 1 1/12 inches.

Whisk

Also called a whip, this kitchen utensil consists of a series of looped wires forming a three dimensional teardrop shape. The wires are joined and held together with a long handle. Whisks are used for whipping ingredients (such as cream, eggs, sauces, etc.), thereby incorporating air into them. Thy come in different sizes for different tasks and are most often made of stainless steel or tinned steel.

Hand mixer

Electric kitchen machine used to beat, mix or whip foods.

Paring knife

The pointed, short-bladed utensil is easy to handle and makes quick work of peeling, removing cores, etc.

Vegetable peeler

A kitchen utensil designed to peel away the outer skin of vegetables. Vegetable peelers come in many designs and are made from a variety of materials.

Cutting board

A “board” which may be wood or plastic (acrylic), used for cutting up foods such as meat and vegetables.

Colander

Used for draining liquid from solids, the colander is a perforated, bowl-shaped container. It can be metal, plastic or ceramic.

Grater

Graters come in several shapes – the most popular styles are flat, cylindrical and box-shape. They’re used to reduce hard foods to small particles or long, thin strips. Most graters are made of metal or plastic that has been perforated with sharp-edged, small or medium size holes or slits. Many have handles at the top for a sure grip. Graters made of stainless steel will not rust, whereas those of tinned steel will.

Sifter

A mesh-bottomed kitchen utensil used to sift ingredients such as flour or confectioners’ sugar. Sifters are usually made of stainless steel or heavy-weight plastic.

Liquid measuring cups

Range in size from 1 to 4 cups. To use, simple pour in liquid and read measurement at eye level.

Dry measuring cups

Containers that come in graduated sizes, used to measure dry amounts of food.

Carving fork

A large fork used in carving cooked meat.

Ladle

A long-handled spoon with a deep bowl for serving liquids.

Wooden spoon

A utensil used for mixing or combining ingredients together.

Slotted spoon

A large spoon with holes used for transferring foods submerged in water or liquid.

Tongs

A grasping utensil consisting of two arms that are joined often at one end to transfer food from one place to another.

Kitchen shears

Cutting implement consisting of two blades joined by a swivel pin that allows the cutting edges to be opened and closed. Used to open packaging or to cut food and are generally for kitchen use only. Can be washed by hand or in dishwasher.

Measuring spoons

Utensil used to measure small amounts of ingredients, such a teaspoon and tablespoons.
