  1. Librarian of Congress

The library of Congress in Washington, D.C., is one of the biggest libraries in the world. One copy of almost every book printed in the United States is there. Such a big library must have a good librarian to take care of it. And one of the best librarians was Herbert Putnam.

Putnam was born in New York city in 1861. When he grew up, he became a lawyer. But working in a law library made him want to make libraries better. So he became a librarian for the public library in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Later he moved to Boston, Massachusetts, and became librarian of the public library there.

In 1899, Putnam got a very important job. He moved to Washington, D.C., and became a Librarian of Congress. When he started his job, the Library of Congress was very different from the way it is today. Then it was just a library for the members of Congress, the people who make the United States laws. But Herbert Putnam saw that the library could do more. He started inter- library loans, a way for libraries to share their books with each other.

Now people could borrow books from libraries that were far away. Then he began making “talking books.” These records of people reading books aloud blind people enjoy books even though they cannot see to read. Putnam also started the Library of Congress Classification System. This is a way of numbering books so that readers can more easily find what they want. Now libraries all over the United States use Putnam´s numbering system.Herbert Putnam loved libraries. And more than any other person, he helped bring libraries closer to all Americans.

  1. Guides to the World of Books

Libraries are wonderful places. The books there can open up a whole new world to the people who read them. Besides books, libraries can have records to listen to and pictures to see. It takes a special person to take care of so many different things and to know where to find everything in a library. That special person is the librarian.

Librarians are in charge of all the books and other things in a library. They make sure everything is in the right order and on the right shelves so it can be found easily. They helped people find the books that are right for them. And when a new book or magazine comes to the library, the librarian finds a place for it.

Librarians do other things as well. In some libraries, special children´s librarians teach children about books. Sometimes they even read stories to the young children who cannot read. Still other librarians are interested in special kinds of books. They work in libraries in hospitals or colleges. Or they may work in archives, a library for very old books so people will be able to use them for many years.

People who want to be librarians go to special schools, called library schools. There they learn to care for books and to set up a library so that people can use it easily. These days people usually go to school four or six years after high school to become librarians.

There is much to learn about being a librarian. With more and more books being printed, librarians today must do their jobs better than ever before. Librarians never stop learning how to make libraries better for people.
