Course # 1205080: 8th Grade Advanced Math
General notes:
8th Grade Advanced Math #1205080 – Revised August 2007
Passport to Algebra and Geometry, McDougal Littel
1. At the beginning of the year, diagnose fluency in the Focal Points for 7th grade. Be prepared to differentiate any instruction to help students that need re-teaching. For entering 8th grade, CollierCounty teachers expect pre-requisite fluency in
1) Fractions, Proportions and Percents
2) Writing equations and translating English to Mathematical symbols (strategies for word problems)
3) Order of operations involving calculations with integers
4) Simple geometric perimeter/circumference, area, volume
5) Pythagorean Theorem
2. All tests after chapter 1 should be reasonably cumulative with an emphasis on the Focal Points for exiting 8th grade. For entering 9th grade, CollierCounty high school teachers expect fluency in
1) Applications of Rates, Ratios, Percents, Proportions with an emphasis on the principles of working with fractional expressions
2) High school level study skills, including reading texts for knowledge, taking useful notes, test preparation with emphasis on multi-level word problems.
3) High level order of operations involving all grouping symbols and exponents and working with real numbers. Simple integer calculations should be accomplished without calculator assistance.
4) Complex measurement of area and volume.
5) Algebraic skills involving multi-step problems.
3. FCAT preparation can be accomplished with startups. FCAT test question types can be included on tests.
4. Any textbook section that is omitted in the pacing can be considered an Extension exercise for that chapter. Note that section 5.8 is not omitted, but moved to be included in the Chapter 8 material.
