Smelly Balloons
Explain what you are observing with the “smelly balloons” be sure to utilize the following terms (include a diagram):
- Diffusion
- Semi Permeable
- Membrane
- Concentration Gradient
- High Concentration
- Low Concentration
______
Naked Egg
Procedure:
DAY 1
- Dissolve the eggshell by placing the egg in a beaker with enough vinegar to cover it
- Place a paper cup on top of the egg with just enough water to hold the egg under the vinegar.
- Let it sit for 24-48 hours (you may need to rub the egg shell after the first day and place it back in the vinegar)
DAY 2
- Empty the vinegar, carefully dry your naked egg and rinse out the beaker.
- Find and record the mass of your egg
- Place your assigned solution (A, B, C, or D) in your breaker – enough to cover your egg.
Stock Solutions: Water, 50g NaCl/500ml; 100g NaCl/500ml; 150g NaCl/500ml
- Let it sit for 24-48 hours
DAY 3
- Empty Solution and your egg CAREFULLY!
- Find and record the mass of your egg. Calculate the percent change from beginning mass to ending mass % Change = (Ending mass – Beginning mass) / Beginning Mass x 100
- Make a bar graph showing the average percent change of each solution.
- Decide which solution is which concentration (0%, 10%, 20%, 30%)
- Make a line graph of the data. The concentration of the salt solution is on the x-axis (in the following order) 0%, 10%, 20%, 30% and the percent change is on the y-axis. Make a line graph with a best-fit line.

What is the concentration of each solution (0%, 10%, 20%, 30%)?
Circle the correct answer:
Solution A / Water 10% 20% 30%Solution B / Water 10% 20% 30%
Solution C / Water 10% 20% 30%
Solution D / Water 10% 20% 30%
Explain your reasoning using appropriate terms/vocabulary.
Bar Graph – Average Percent Change of Each Solution
Line Graph – Percent Change in Correct Order
- Look at the line graph, Look on your line graph. Find the point where your line crosses the 0 line. This is the point where the eggs do not lose or gain any mass. Follow down to the bottom axis to see the concentration of salt at this point. What is the concentration? What information does this tell you about this point?
- Describe each solution as Hypo-, Hyper-, or Iso- tonic. Explain how you know.
