Regular meetings with young people via the Youth Essex Assembly has indentified that young people find the cost of bus and rail travel and complexity of fares charged a deterent to use.

Research conducted 5 years ago, partnership forrmed with disabled groups representing a range of disabilities and age. Initial research concluded that disabled people do face barriers when travelling in Essex. Barriers identified include problems accessing transport (either physical or confidence), a lack of knowledage about transport opportunities and little idea of where to go for help.

2 Barriers to travel for disabled people / Real or perceived barriers
Lack of information / For the past 5 years we have worked in partnership with disabled groups as the Options for Independent Living Transport Group. The group meets at least 4 times and year and has further sub groups. Transport providers are included in the group (bus) and sub groups (rail).
The group works with us on all issues relating to our work. / E S & H / Fran Garthwaite / The outcome of what we do is reflected in our strategy and day to day work on the basis that if we get it right for disabled people it is right for all other travellers.
We have influenced commercial bus and rail operators and work locally and nationally. / On – going partnership a full report of success can be demonstrated the group continues to work
3 Need to gather data and intelligence to understand if there are any real or perceived barriers to transport for women and BME communities.
