Passenger Transport Assistant

6-9 hours/week (some flexibility required)

£9.21/hour; 3 hours/day; 2-3 days/week generally

Job Description

Job Purpose

Passenger Transport Assistants have joint responsibility with the driver for the safety, welfare and proper conduct of clients and passengers in accordance with their particular emotional or physical needs. Currently this is required during journeys from The Crescent in Bedford to the Kempston Adult Centre. They report to the Transport Team Leader (Road).

Job responsibilities

Passenger assistance

  • Accompany clients safely from the Crescent and Kempston Adult Centre into the vehicle and vice versa
  • Supervise the seating and securing of clients and where appropriate behaviour
  • Act as first point of contact between clients, relatives, carers, and the Centre Staff, conveying any relevant messages and information to all parties.
  • Understand and respect the client’s privacy, dignity and confidentiality.

Administration and Reporting

  • Liaise with office staff regarding shifts in order to have a full and complete understanding of when required for work, and routes to be followed
  • Report any deviations from schedule immediately to office staff
  • Complete all relevant journey and vehicle documentation on the day of travel
  • Report any defects or damage and complete the necessary documentation

General

  • Meet the highest standards of punctuality and reliability in order to ensure a high-quality service
  • Attend training as required
  • Adhere to BRCC’s policies and procedures at all times
  • Undertake other duties as may reasonably be requested

Person Specification

Essential Attributes / Desirable Attributes
EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS / None required / A care certificate
EXPERIENCE / Experience in a caring environment / Previous experience in passenger transport assistance
SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE / Knowledge and understanding of the needs of less able & vulnerable people
Willingness to undertake PATS training / Knowledge of the voluntary & community transport sector
Knowledge of Health & Safety
PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES / Empathy for adults and young people with physical and/or learning disabilities
Ability to work on own and as part of a team
Ability to use initiative

Physically fit – able to assist clients with mobility problems
