Scavenger Hunt

Part I: Five Themes of Geography and Thematic Maps

Complete the following requirements/parts regarding the Five Themes of Geography/Thematic Maps (Part I), ArcGIS (Part II) and Regions (Part III). The first partnership to turn in one packet (including Parts I, II, and III) that is completed and answered correctly will be the winner. How you and your partner finish in the scavenger hunt will factor into a formula used in determining what size state you will get for the STATE game. Each subsequent group that follows turning in their scavenger hunt, will receive a smaller/lesser state. The last and final group to complete the following requirements will have the smallest/least state for their class period. Remember, the goal is to be swift and accurate. You may not use any previously discussed examples when completing the following sections.

Using ArcGIS

Complete the following assignment using ArcGIS

Once you reach the home page, click on Gallery. Now explore…

1)Explore at least 3 maps using ArcGIS

2)What determinants are depicted in each of the gallery maps? (titles)

3)How will this information be useful in AP Human Geography?

4)What types of maps not found currently on ArcGIS would be useful in our class?

5) How does GIS allow for increased interconnectedness of people across the globe?

Part III: Regions (The American Southwest)

Type the following website in your web browser…

Instructions

  1. Use the mouse to trace the area of the map that you feel corresponds to what you think qualifies as the region you chose. When you are finished outlining the entire area you have identified, click Save My Initial View.
  2. Click any layer on the right-hand side of the screen to turn on a characteristic that typically is used to define the region you chose. Turn all layers on and off individually to learn areas that correspond to most characteristics.
  3. Answer the following questions by completing attached document and turning in on the assigned due date. Print off maps of selected 3 layers and your initial view of and attach them to the back of the following questions.

Mapping Culture Regions

PRINT OFF ALL THREE MAPS (CHARACTERISTICS) AND ATTACH TO THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS PRIOR TO TURNING IN.

QUESTIONS

  1. Think about what the region means to you and consider whether each map corresponds to your image of the region. In your opinion, which three maps (or characteristics) best define the region you chose.
  2. Justify each of the three characteristics (or layers) you chose in question #1. Why, in other words, do you believe each of these three variables represents the way of life of the culture region?
  1. Turn on all the layers at once. Regions that overlap are progressively shaded. The darkest shading therefore will be where most of the definitions overlap. Think of this area as the core of the culture region. What states or countries (or parts of either) are the core of your culture region? What city (or cities) would you say lie in the core?
  1. Turn on the three layers you chose in questions 1 and 2. How closely do the boundaries of your three variables agree? EXPLAIN!
  1. What other variable (other than the ones listed on the right-hand side) could be used to define the American Southwest as a culture region? Why? (Please be specific – it must be measurable).
  1. With your three layers showing, click on My Initial View.

a. How does your initial perception of the region differ from your composite view?

b. What have you learned about the culture region?

c. What major type of region is a cultural region most like?
