Part 2 of the performance-based assessment consists of:

  1. Choosing the subject
  2. Choosing the grade level
  3. Planning the lesson

You will have three hours to complete this part of the assessment. Your work will be evaluated during Part 3.

Questions the evaluators may ask you during Part 3 include:

  • Why did you choose what you chose for your guided practice?
  • Why did you use a particular strategy with your content?
  • How would you give students feedback on their work?
  • How would you differentiate your instruction to meet the needs of all learners?

The evaluators will ask you the following question:

  • What would you do if a percentage of your students failed the assessment?

Keep these questions in mind to help focus your work.

Please use all time wisely. If you finish before the end of the three hours, be respectful of your classmates as they complete their work.

At the end of the three hours, you should have:

  • A complete lesson plan with strategies for assessing your students

Read all materials thoroughly before starting, including the rubric. If you have a question, raise your hand and wait to be answered.

Make sure to save this document to your desktop as you work. Change the file name to your MSIS ID, First Name, and Last Name (ex. 123456789 Sample Student).

Part 1: Choosing the subject (20 minutes)

Choose a subject area from the list below. Then, choose an objective from that subject area.

  • Career and Technical Education
  • Humanities: Arts, English Language Arts, Social Studies, World Languages

Part 2: Choosing the grade level (ten minutes)

Determine which grade level you will teach from the list below.

  • You are a second grade teacher with 18 students in your class. 13 students are on grade level. 3 are above grade level. 2 are below. Using the subject you chose during Part 1, create a lesson plan than fits the needs of all of your students.
  • You are a fifth grade teacher with 20 students in your class. 15 students are on grade level. 3 are above grade level. 2 are below. Using the subject you chose during Part 1, create a lesson plan than fits the needs of all of your students.
  • You are an eighth grade teacher with 22 students in your class. 16 students are on grade level. 3 are below. 3 are above. Using the subject you chose during Part 1, create a lesson plan than fits the needs of all of your students.
  • You are a high school teacher with 19 students in your class. 13 students are on grade level. 4 are below. 2 are above. Using the subject you chose during Part 1, create a lesson plan than fits the needs of all of your students.

Part 3: Planning the lesson

Using a variety of research-based instructional strategies and skillsand taking into account the range of higher order thinking, plan a lesson for the students in your class. The plan should adequately teach your chosen objective as well as meet the needs of your students. Include at least three assessment strategies to go along with the lesson. Two should be formative and one should be summative. Type your lesson plan into the template on the following pages.
