6TH GRADE

PHYSICAL EDUCATION SYLLABUS

We begin the year with much anticipation and excitement. We are looking forward to exciting and rewarding experiences as we progress through the year. Our physical education classes will stress physical fitness, skill development, social skills, teamwork, sportsmanship, leadership, strategy, goal setting, cooperation, and fun. Students will participate in a wide variety of activities that will help them grow physically, socially, mentally, and emotionally. Students will participate in approximately 150 days or physical education and 30 days of health. Every Thursday will be a fitness day, where students participate\ate in a cardiovascular activity.

Sixth grade students will have 30 days of health during the second trimester. The health course will cover Personal Health and Wellness, Healthful Relationships and Sexuality, Nutrition, Disease Prevention, and Substance Education, Safety and First Aid. For health, students will need the following materials:

·  2 Pocket Folder

·  Paper or Pencil

To maximize instructional time, activity time, and safety, the following responsibilities and interventions have been developed. They are for student’s safety.

CONDUCT

1. Follow directions at all times – safety is everyone’s responsibility

2. Practice GOOD sportsmanship at all times

3. Respect yourself and other

4. Use equipment when and how instructed to

5. Dress appropriately in order to participate safely in all classes

6. Do not leave class without permission

7. NO GUM, CANDY, FOOD, OR DRINKS in the gyms

8. Report all accidents or injuries to a teacher – no matter how small

INTERVENTIONS

1. Verbal warning

2. Teacher – Student conference

3. Time our / Red chairs

4. Lunch Detention / Afterschool Detention – both result in parent contact

5. Guidance / Office referral

CLASSROOM PRICEDURES FOR PHYSICAL EDUCATION

APPROPRIATE DRESS

·  Please wear tennis shoes with securely tied laces and backs. No heels, sandals, boots, or slip on shoes are allowed.

·  Sleeved crew neck T-shirts. If you do not have an appropriate T-shirt, one will be provided for you.

·  Pants or shorts only. They are to be worn securely around the waist with no undergarments showing. Pants should not be rolled up, and no skirts will be allowed.

EXCUSES

·  A Doctor’s note is required if you need to be excused for more than 2 consecutive days.

·  Students must bring a written note from a parent to be excused from participating in P.E. A parent note is only good for 2 class periods. The students will have an in class assignment to make up their daily points.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION DAILY GRADING

Students will earn 20 points per day.

1. 5 points for proper dress, which includes:

* Tennis shoes that are securely tied and have backs.

* Crew neck T-shirt

* Comfortable waist high shorts or pants

* Students will be responsible to dress appropriately during cooler weather for outdoor activities.

2. 5 points for Warm – Up activities

3. 10 points for participation during the daily activity

TARDY POLICY

Students will be expected to come dressed and ready for class, on time. After accumulating 3 tardy marks, students will receive a lunch detention, as well as, a phone call home.
