Entrance Antiphon

God is in his holy place, God who unites those who dwell in his house; he himself gives might and strength to his people.

Responsorial Psalm Psalm 138

On the day I called, you answered me, O Lord.

I thank you, Lord, with all my heart;
You have heard the words of my mouth.

In the presence of the angels I praise you.

I bow down towards your holy temple.

I give thanks to your name
for your merciful love and faithfulness.

You have exalted your name and your promise over all.

On the day I called, you answered me;
you increased the strength of my soul.

The Lord is high, yet he looks on the lowly,
and the haughty he knows from afar.

You give me life though I walk amid affliction;
you stretch out your hand against the anger of my foes.

With your right hand you save me;
the Lord will accomplish this for me.

O Lord, your merciful love is eternal;
discard not the work of your hands.

On the day I called, you answered me, O Lord.

Gospel Acclamation

Alleluia, alleluia!

You have received the spirit of son-ship;
in him we cry, “Abba! Father!” Alleluia!

Communion Antiphon

Bless the Lord, O my soul, and never forget all his benefits.

Saint Vincent de Paul Society- Donations/Debit Orders

The Fatima SVDP is desperately in need of regular monthly income for their ongoing projects at Ottowa, Wylie House, Missionaries & St Theresa’s Children’s Home, since their current monthly commitments is a minimum of approx R20000,00 per month just for these projects alone. With the increasing cost of food, even this amount is not really sufficient anymore and if income cannot be increased then the amount of food distributed will need to be reduced proportionately. The regular income of the SVDP is limited to the once a month basket collection (which averages between R6000 to R8000) plus income from sales of second hand goods at the Golden Hours stall of about R1000,00, plus a few debit orders from Fatima parishioners of about R4000. So this means the SVDP has a substantial shortfall every month, which it has managed to subsidise previously by way of funds accumulated from other past fundraising events. However these funds are nearly depleted and the SVDP is appealing to the Parish for help and in particular to those prepared to donate via way of monthly debit order, as this will help the SVDP to know how much they can spend on helping the poor every month. If only 50% of the 600 families in the Parish donated just R100 per month via debit order then the SVDP would have R30000 which would give them the funds to increase the food currently distributed. So please give this serious consideration as your SVDP cannot function without your HELP and thereby make the SVDP your CHARITY of CHOICE!

If you would like to make a contribution to the SVDP any payments/debit orders can be paid directly into their bank account below (or debit order forms can be emailed to you):

Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Year C
28th July, 2013 . Brendan McConvery, C.Ss.R.
Commentary
First Reading (Gen 18:20-32). This text resumes the conversation between Abraham and his guests (First Reading of last Sunday) after they have left his camping place. Like a good host, he accompanies them on the first part of their journey. The final destination of the Lord’s two companions, later identified as angels (19:1), is Sodom, the mythical city of evil. Their mission is to undertake a final testing of the inhabitants whose failure will result in the destruction of the city.
As the journey begins, the Lord takes Abraham into his confidence: ‘Shall I hide from Abraham what I am about to do, seeing that Abraham shall become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him?’ (18:17-18). Their conversation is one of the great set-pieces of the Hebrew Bible’s teaching on prayer. Abraham’s concern for the fate of Sodom is motivated by family interest since his nephew Lot and his family live there, but his opening remark, ‘Will you indeed sweep away the righteous with the wicked?’ is a perennial challenge to any attempt to explain natural disasters as a divine way of righting the cosmic moral order.
The final editors of Genesis and their readers were less concerned with the destruction of Sodom than they were preoccupied about the destruction of Jerusalem and the Exile. The Exile raised sharp questions for Israel about the suffering of the innocent. Abraham’s haggling with God is an attempt to answer the question: what proportion of just to wicked is required to ensure the survival of the word? Abraham finally beats God down to conceding that ten just people would be enough to spare the city. The implication of Jerusalem’s fall was that it could not even muster such a small number. In many prophetic texts of the exilic period, Sodom becomes a code-name for Jerusalem (e.g. Is 1:10;3:9;Jer 23:14; Ezek 16:46)
Second Reading (Col 2:12-14). The brief reading recalls the profoundly mysterious dimension of Christian life as a participation in the death and resurrection of Christ. Contemporary readers may need to remember how dramatic the celebration of Baptism was in the early community. A symbolic drowning by total immersion in the baptismal pool gave new believers a vivid sense of dying with Christ, just as the assistance of the celebrant and other participants in helping them to emerge from the baptismal pool was symbolic of God’s power in raising Jesus from the dead.
Gospel (Lk 11:1-13). This passage is a complex of four discrete units of tradition with an introduction. Most of it is taken from the common tradition that Matthew has collected in a more orderly fashion in the Sermon on the Mount. Two sections, the introduction and the parable of the friend at midnight, are unique to Luke.
The introduction begins, as is often the case in Luke, with an instance of Jesus’ example as a man of prayer and the disciples’ request to teach them to pray ‘as John taught his disciples’. The tradition has not preserved any example of John’s prayer. Scholars commonly believe that the Lucan form of the Lord’s Prayer is closer to the original prayer taught by Jesus than Matthew’s better-known version, which was probably polished by several generations of use in the worship of the community.
Luke’s version comprises five brief petitions, the first two relating to God (the hallowing of the name and the coming of God’s reign) while the remaining three relate to the life of the one who prays (for daily bread, forgiveness of sins, to be spared from the final eschatological testing). The petition for daily bread provides a key word link to the first parable, the story of the friend at midnight. The persistence of the one looking for bread provides the key word to a teaching on the need for persistence in prayer (‘ask’, ‘seek’, ‘knock’).
The second parable, the kind of gifts that people give their children, is also taken from the common tradition. The final words are a reminder that the supreme gift that God gives in answer to prayer is the gift of the Spirit.
