MAY 12, 2013__ SEVENTH SUNDAY OF EASTER

FROM FR. DAN’S DESK….

Happy Mother’s Day Everyone! This weekend we remember at all the Masses the names of mothers, living and deceased, which have been sent in by way of the Mother’s Day Remembrance Envelopes placed on the Altar in the remembrance basket this weekend. May God grant peace to all those who have died, and joy and love in this life, to all who are still among us!

A very HAPPY BIRTHDAY to our parishioner – Betty Laudato, who celebrates on this Mother’s Day, her 100th Birthday! Those of you that know Betty know her to be a very kind and graceful lady, and we are so happy to celebrate with her at the 7:00 AM Mass on Sunday. Betty attends that Mass most weeks and I will be presenting her with a few special commemorations on this very special occasion! I know we have a few other parishioners who are nearing the century mark – so eat your vegetables and get plenty of sleep – we look forward to celebrating your birthdays as well!

Not nearly 100 years old yet, but nearing his retirement, is Ray Broderick, our parishioner and Principal of Westfield High School. Ray and his family have been long time parishioners here, and Ray and his wife Tina, are part of “Team Broderick” – a group of Broderick family members that clean the church on Saturdays as part of their stewardship to our Parish. Ray will be retiring at the end of June along with Tina, who teaches in the Westfield School System. They are both looking forward to doing some anticipated travelling after retirement. From many conversations with Ray, I know that he has a really wonderful outlook on the field of education today. He also is very realistic about the challenges of education and young people today, but he is also very optimistic about the possibilities for the future of each young person, and helping young people to reach their potential. I’m happy that so many of the youth in our Parish over the years, have been blessed to know Mr. Broderick during their time at the high school, and benefit from his years of guiding and motivating young people. We wish Ray and Tina well in their retirement!

Speaking of influencing young people, it’s at this time of year, that each parish in the Diocese gets to nominate a CCD teacher for the Diocesan Pius X Award, given annually to an outstanding teacher in our Religious Education Programs. I am happy to say that this year the recipient of this award is our parishioner, John Strauss. Many of you know John from his cantoring and directing of the Choir at the 8:30 Sunday Mass, as well as his cantoring at so many funerals in our parish. John also is, what I call, our “Techno-Wizard”. He has a great technical awareness in most areas of electronics and sound, and has been so involved in our technical set up for the choir area in the church and all the video and sound systems we use over at the Parish Center. We have come a long way technically, with John’s help. What I appreciate so much about John is his giving nature. He has always made himself available to me and to so many others in our parish who often have need of a technical set-up for a program or presentation. We all know we can call on John, and if he is able to do it, he will always take the time to help! But John is more than just our technical guy or our cantor, he has also been a CCD Teacher for many years in our Middle and High School CCD Programs and has been a pioneer since the inception of the new curriculum and format for our High School Program – known as “DIAC”, which is now going into its 7th year. John has a gift with our high school students – he loves to engage them and they certainly respond. John is a highly educated man who has taught biology and chemistry in a medical college, and has now found his “vocation” in teaching in a special school for students with troubled backgrounds. John has certainly found his niche in teaching and guiding young people, and we are blessed to have him giving of his time and talent to us and to our young people in the parish. And so I congratulate John Strauss as our 2013 Pius X Award Winner!

It’s come to my attention recently, that due to gluten allergies or sensitivity, some parishioners have not been able to receive Communion. I have had a couple of requests for gluten–free hosts, and so we have ordered some that are specially made - they are not completely gluten-free, but have only a slight trace of gluten in them. We are establishing some way to distribute these special hosts at all Masses. If there is anyone who would like to receive Communion in this form, please contact me by phone or e-mail, and let me know which Mass you generally attend, so that we can have an idea of how many hosts to have on hand at any one time. We will plan to reserve some in the Tabernacle at all the Masses.

Finally, a special THANKS to Paul and Cindy Lussier, for all of the nice gardening work they are doing in our new outdoor Stations of the Cross Garden across from the Chapel. They are doing some planting, trimming and pruning, and adding so much to that already wonderful area through their gardening skills. If you have not taken a walk over to the Stations Garden – please do so and take in the beauty and quiet of this special place!

Next week we celebrate Pentecost and the highpoint of our Easter Season. Have a great week everyone!

God Bless, Fr. Dan
