PURPOSE

The post holder contributes to the development of community cohesion across the school. This includes working with students, parent and staff from diverse cultural, religious and linguistic backgrounds. This is to improve social and learning relationships across members of the school community. The inclusion, well-being and educational outcomes of students are improved and vulnerable communities are helped to integrate in both school and the local community.

Key Objectives:

  • Support two way liaison between established and new community groups across the school to promote community cohesion.
  • Identify the needs of students and families from diverse backgrounds, making suggestions to leaders for appropriate responses to improve their inclusion, integration and engagement in all aspects of life.
  • Organise activities which foster improved student, parent and staff understanding of the diverse backgrounds of students.
  • Assist with the admission of new arrivals from new community groups into the school and foster links with the established community, including parent groups.
  • Provide occasional support to students in class where they are finding it difficult to interact with the learning because of a language barrier and where they might be holding up the learning of others.
  • Signpost parents to sources of advice/information/guidance about the English education system, opportunities within the local community and English language courses where required.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Teaching and Learning:

  • Draw on the Academy’s own research and wider information to suggest and plan activities to promote community cohesion. This includes leading focused student discussion groups, working to address specific issues, contributing to aspects of teaching such as PSHE, British Values and Citizenship.
  • Help student achieve agreed learning targets, including making relevant resources, using computer programmes, advising on homework, providing translations (where possible) and signposting to further support.
  • Create and develop learning resources that can be used by students, families, community and other agencies as appropriate, to achieve the best outcomes for students.
  • Provide occasional support to students in lessons where they are finding it difficult to interact with the learning and where they might be hindering the learning of others.
  • Make decisions, in consultation with management, about the nature of the intervention/support required, its frequency and final outcomes.

Administration:

  • Maintain electronic and paper records of student support, to show progress/impact in learning and any wider planned outcomes.
  • Carry out administration connected to the role.
  • Develop a bank of resources/information to signpost to communities and other agencies.

Liaison:

  • Work closely with SLT, Departments Heads, Heads of Year and Inclusion staffto ensure a consistent approach to improving the life chances for students from diverse cultural, religious and linguistic backgrounds.
  • Work closely with students, parent and staff from diverse cultural, religious and linguistic backgrounds to improve social and learning relationships across members of the school community.
  • Organise and participate in formal/informal meetings within school, to effectively implement a wide range of activities. This may include out of hours parents’ evenings and student consultations.
  • Liaise with external stakeholders and members of the local community.
  • Promote the engagement of parents in their children’s ;earning, in school events and courses
  • Signpost parents who are new to English, to English language courses.

Other:

  • Be aware of and comply with policies and procedures relating to child protection, health, safety and security, confidentiality and data protection, reporting all concerns to an appropriate member of Academy staff.
  • Be committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of young people.
  • Be aware of and support difference to help ensure everyone has equal access to the services of the Academy and feels valued, respecting their social, cultural, linguistic, religious and ethnic background.
  • Attend and participate in meetings as required.
  • Be part of a team supervising student behaviour around the site.
  • Undertake any other duties as directed and appropriate to the post when required.
