Paper Doll Biopoem

Objectives:

  1. To show diversity amongst students.
  2. To create a sense of community amongst students.
  3. To write a poem describing some characteristics about one’s self.

Instructions:

  1. Pass out the Biopoem options to students. Make one class set of the options to use throughout the day.
  2. Have students choose one poetic format they like and, then have them write a poem about themselves.
  3. Once the poem is completed, they must show it to you, and then they will get their paper doll.
  4. Students must cut out the paper doll and pretend that this paper doll is a mini-representation of them selves.
  5. They must write their poem nicely in the center of the doll using pen or their computers at home.
  6. They must dress the doll the way they like to dress.
  7. They must glue a current headshot or last year’s school picture of themselves to the head of the doll.

Presentation

  1. Explain to students that they will be presenting their paper doll bio-poems in front of the entire class and that their paper dolls will be displayed throughout the classroom.
  2. While students are presenting the rest of the class is taking Cornell Notes on each presenter.
  3. They must write the presenter’s first and last name.
  4. They must write down at least two things they learned about each presenter.
  5. The Cornell Notes will be used later to assess students community and knowing one another.

Paper Doll Biopoem Options

Directions: Pick one poetic format that you like and write a poem about you.

Option #1: BIO-DIAMONTE POEM:

This poem should look like a diamond if done correctly.

Your first name

2 adjectives to describe you

3 “ing” words to describe you (think verbs)

2 adjectives to describe you

Your last name

Option #2: GROWING UP POEM:

For the first half of the poem, think about all the ways your parents still baby you. For the second half of the poem think about the choices that your parents now let you make on your own, now that your getting older. (The example is about my 2-year-old son…I hope yours is a lot different than mine.)

Sample Poem

I still have my mom help me brush my teeth.

Option #3: ACROSTIC POEM:

Begin by writing your name vertically. When you have done this then you go back to each letter and think of a word, phrase or sentence that starts with that letter and describes you.

Sample Poem about a girl named Sharon.

Sweet girl.
Has a sweet heart.
A nice friend.
Rocks this world.
On the best friend list.
Never alone

Option #4: STUDENT CHOICE POEM:

If you love writing poetry or love writing in general, try writing your own poem. You decide how long it should be and what form it should take. It’s completely up to you. The only requirement is that the poem is all about you, and that you put forth 100% positive effort in creating your poem.
