Arthur Conan Doyle was born on May 22nd1859, in Edinburgh. He grew up in a large family: he had 9 brothers and sisters.

From 1876 to 1881 he went to the University of Edinburgh to study medicine. He also began writing short stories; his first published story appeared in Chambers' Edinburgh Journal before he was 20. After his term at university, he served as a ship's doctor on a voyage to the West African coast.

In 1885, he married Louisa Hawkins, who suffered from tuberculosis and died on July1906. Then he married Jean Elizabeth Leckie. He had five children.

His first significant work was A Study in Scarlet, which was published in 1886 and where Sherlock Holmes first appeared.

He moved to London in 1891. Conan Doyle continued writing but he was soon fed up with Sherlock Holmes.

So, in 1893, he decided to “kill” Holmes down a waterfall in the story, The Final Problem. However the readers protested and Conan Doyle finally brought the character back.

Holmes returned in The Adventure of the Empty House in 1903.

On July 7th1930, Conan Doyle died of heart attack in England.
