COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course introduces the student to the broad field of surgical technology. It is a prerequisite course to entry into the clinical training sequence of courses. Included are basic subject areas such as general introductory information, and introduction to patient care.
PREREQUISITES: Concurrent enrollment or successful completion of SURG 1010, SURG 1020 , ORNT 1000, and CPTR 1000 are required.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:

1) Identify and describe concepts and events that contributed to the development of surgery as it is today.
2) Identify and list different types of health care facilities and state how they differ from each other, including hospital organization and administrative structure.
3) List and explain methods of covering health care costs.
4) Describe procedures for accrediting hospitals and educational programs, including but not limited to, Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) and Committee on Allied Health Education and Accreditation (CAAHEP).
5) Define and list the purpose of a job description for a surgical technologist.
6) Acknowledge the proper chain of command in the operating room.
7) Demonstrate the key elements in the development of a surgical conscience.
8) Name and categorize the surgical team and their roles including the various roles in the surgical technology profession..
9) Discuss the factors that affect the lifestyle of the surgical technologist, including accountability for personal actions and obligations, as well as methods of coping with stress on the job.
10) List and explain the impact of professional organizations, including steps in becoming a certified surgical technologist (CST). Discuss other credentialing options in the profession of surgical technology.
11) Identify and describe principles of physical environment of the surgical suite and environmental safety procedures.
12) List and identify hospital departments that relate to the surgical suites in providing quality patient care.
13) Assess the physical, spiritual, and psychological needs of a patient, including special populations, and their family members.
14) Demonstrate appropriate behavior in response to the needs manifested by the surgical patient.
15) Evaluate attitudes, beliefs, and classifications regarding death and dying as well as coping strategies and mechanisms.

ATTENDANCE POLICY:
All students must be officially enrolled in any course that they attend. It is expected that students will attend scheduled classes regularly and on time. If an absence occurs, it is the responsibility of the student to make up all missed work, if approved by the instructor. Students who stop attending a course and do not officially drop, may receive a grade of “F” for all coursework missed that may result in a punitive final grade. An instructor may drop a student for excessive absences if the student misses 10 percent of the class. This policy shall be superseded by any more stringent attendance policy required by a regulatory or licensing body having jurisdiction over program requirements. The attendance policy for each class must be included in the course syllabus. Attendance will be tracked and maintained for various reporting purposes.

ACADEMIC HONESTY:
Plagiarism, cheating, and other forms of academic dishonesty are prohibited. In addition to other possible disciplinary sanctions, which may be imposed through the regular institutional procedures as a result of academic misconduct, your instructor will assign a zero for the exercise or examination that evidences academic misconduct for the first offense and assign an “F” for the course for repeated offenses.
