Lesson Plan

Teacher: Richard Salmon / Course: ND Music Technology / Scheme of work ref:
NCFE & ND 27,28,33,42
Subject: ND Music Technology / Module / Unit: NCFE & ND 27,28,33,42 (parallel) / No of students:
Location: W361 & 452 & studios / Date: Week 12 / Time:Mondays 9.00-5.00 & Fridays 9 - 3

Lesson aims:

Specific learning outcomes, including key skills.
(NB. different students may have different outcomes set for them)
By the end of this session, students will be able to:
Demonstrate a greater understanding of the subjects listed below and integrate comments into technical notebooks. Furthermore, students should be armed with enough practical knowledge of the subjects listed below to inform practice and enable critical, evaluative comment following self driven research.
RECAP: Computer operating systems: Plugs/sockets : Input/output : Manipulation
Unit 27 MIDI interfaces: eg MIDI, In, Out, Thru, serial communication, chains, splitter boxes
Unit 28General accessories: eg microphone accessories, headphone types, headphone amplifiers,
Unit 33 System requirements: eg an awareness of minimum operating systems, microprocessor, memory, hard disk capacity
Unit 42 Performance: eg computer generated, electro-acoustic, integration of music technology with traditional instruments and voice
Technical Notebook progression Reviews (inc key skills tracking) / ROW / How will learning be checked? (Not necessarily in the same way for all students)
Learning is checked through the inclusion of a range of instruments used both during class time and through assignment work with submissions of digital evidence. A candidate maintained digital technical notebook is used to accumulate, correlate and publish portfolio evidence to support learning outcomes for both the main programme and key skills. Both development and review of technical notebooks and portfolio evidence is planned across the complete programme (see course calendar) Question & answer (Q & A) is promoted and available to all students throughout the course and every session within it. Observation records and outcome tracking documentation are integrated into the main programme and technical notebook. (Note year 1 are given the technical notebook to complete where as year 2 make their own)
Preparation (including resources, seating, technician, health and safety)
Students should come to every timetabled session with a pen & paper for taking notes on the subjects discussed in class. Every Student is required to maintain a digital copy of their technical notebook which should be used for the development and inclusion of text, graphs, spreadsheets, audio visual material and other electronic media evidence to support the learning outcomes for the stated units. A hard printed copy of evidence should be printed and placed in a portfolio. The portfolio should be maintained by course candidates. The portfolio should consist of two folders, one for the main programme outcomes evidence and the other for key skills outcomes evidence.
Differentiation (Planning for:different abilities / concentration spans / speeds of learning / learning styles / reading abilities /experience / motivation / interests. Providing: extension work, different tasks and resources, learning support, assessing knowledge in different ways, different outcomes etc). Refer to Student Profile Form. Include arrangements for late and absent students.
Easy to read fonts, short sentences & simple words are used where possible (e.g. please see lesson plans, unit assignments and paperwork, website etc.)
Since the majority of students in this group are Visual & practical, a mix of Visual & Practical methods are utilised for teaching and learning. Auditory backup of Visual & Practical methods are used throughout the units. An open Q + A approach is available to all students throughout the units specified. A flexible approach to lesson plan and curriculum delivery is adopted to differentiate for student’s different abilities / concentration spans / speeds of learning / learning styles / reading abilities /experience / motivation / interests. This approach directly addresses the college mission statement. (accessible learning and social inclusion)
Late attendees are directed to the handouts table and/or by a notice that is placed on the outside door at the beginning of each session. They are then integrated as soon as possible. Assignments & support documentation are made available for attendees & non-attendees alike, where possible this is done via the web. This approach supports the IT & Communications Key Skills factors specified in unit outcome tracking documentation.
