DIR®/Floortime Summer Camp

Our goal is for the children in the camp to have fun & to develop play skills in rich interactions with peers. Each child is supported in a way to enable him or her to feel comfortable & successful in the ebb & flow of play with his/her peers.

  • The philosophy of the camp is Floortime with the focus on relating & social interaction with peers.
  • The camp is two weeks long, three hours per day

Site: Grout Elementary School

3119 SE Holgate Blvd. Portland, OR 97202

We will have access to a classroom, large playground and grass field at the elementary school

Dates:Monday, July 9, 2012 through Friday, July 20, 2012

Times:Monday through Friday, 9am - 12pm

The Camp:The camp space is set up with a variety of toys such as a dollhouse, home center, cars, trains, dress up, and arts and crafts. During the three-hour camp, there will be opportunities for inside and outside time, and snack time (bring your own snack). The focus of the camp is for the campers to engage in “free play” with their peers. The camp is not structured in the sense of the therapists & aides teaching skills, rather by embracing the DIR/Floortime approach we support the children with appropriate affect, gesture, language & sensory support that is sensitive to each individual child to facilitate their ability to share attention with one another, to engage & be engaged, to read & respond to one another’s invitation to play & to sustain interactions during spontaneous play thus supporting their functional emotional developmental capacities.

Staff:Rebecca Peterson, OTR/L, Director of PNPT and DIR Certificate Candidate, will lead and supervise the camp. She will also have the assistance of a recent Occupational Therapy graduate, who did an internship with our Seattle office during the summer of 2011 and worked in their Floortime Summer Camp. In addition there will be “Floortime players” who have been trained in Floortime by Rebecca Peterson, OTR/L. Our “players” have worked in our camps during past summers and/or have experience in working directly with children with varying special needs. In order to provide the most effective camp for your child, we will have staff training before and during the camp. Our goal is provide 1:1 support for each child as needed.

Parent Support/Training: There will be a parent evening session during the camp to provide you with information on Floortime, how it is integrated into the camp, and how you can bring this into your interactions at home.

Campers New to Pacific NW Pediatric Therapy: Campers who are not currently clients in our practice will need to have a one hour individual intake session prior to the camp. At the time of the session we will observe your child’s play and interaction to develop an understanding of your child’s functional emotional development and individual profile so we can best meet his/her needs at the camp. The fee for the individual intake session is $140. We ask that you please complete and return both the summer camp registration form and our intake questionnaireas soon as possible. We will contact you to schedule the intake session prior to the start of camp.

Fees: The fee is $1000 for this two-week camp.
