All students MUST do all
  • successfully earn 3.5 credits of math (including geometry and algebra)
  • successfully earn at least 1 math credit during the final 2 years of high school

Visual and Performing Arts / 1 Credit in visual arts, performing arts, or applied arts / All CTE programs are considered to be applied arts courses / 1 credit may be earned by:

  • Completion of a formal CTE program
This credit must be in addition to the number of those credits otherwise required.
World Language / (a) 1 credit (K-12) that is grade-appropriate in a language other than English
(b) 2nd credit (K-12) that is grade-appropriate in a language other than English
OR:
Completion of a district-approved CTE program
OR:
1 additional credit in visual or performing arts / (graduating class 2015-2020 only)
May replace 1 credit by completing a district approved CTE program
Note: Class of 2015 has never been mandated to complete 2 credits on World Language / None

Technical notes:

  • Middle school planning: The board of a school district… shall provide the opportunity for each pupil to develop an educational development plan during grade 7, and shall ensure that each pupil review his or her educational development plan during grade 8 and revises it as appropriate before he or she begins high school. .. During the process of developing and reviewing pupil’s educational development plan, the pupil shall be advised that many of the curricular requirements… may be fulfilled through career and technical education.—HB 4466
  • Double dipping:Credit is based on student proficiency with the content. How and where they learn the content has no bearing on whether or not they earn credit as long as they satisfactorily demonstrate proficiency on district-determined measures. So for instance, if a student takes a physics class that requires students to also learn important mathematics concepts, students should be able to earn partial or full credit in both subject areas if they demonstrate they have learned the content. – MDE MMC FAQ
  • Personal curriculum requests: If the request for a personal curriculum is made by the pupil’s parent or legal guardian or… an emancipated minor, the school district or public school academy shall develop a personal curriculum for the pupil. … The department or a school district or public school academy (PSA) shall not limit or discourage the number of pupils with a personal curriculum on any basis other than the best interest of each additional pupil.
  • Annual Notification:A school district or PSA annually shall notify each of its pupils and a parent or legal guardian of each of its pupils that all pupils are entitled to a personal curriculum under this subsection. The annual notice shall include an explanation of what a personal curriculum is and state that if a personal curriculum is requested, the public school or PSA will grant that request.
