imgsrc= by Swiss immigrant Albert Wittnauer in New York City, the Wittnauer Watch Co. became a true watch company in 1880, when the brand was "officially" introduced. Albert, along with his brother Louis (and later Emile) imported complete watches or just mechanisms from its Geneva, Switzerland factory.
In 1889 the company ran its very first advertisement. Appearing in the 20th anniversary issue of the Jewelers' Weekly, the ad notes that the company sold both "plain and complicated" watches, suggesting that it was a source for chronographs and repeating watches. By the 20th century they were firmly established as providing watches, chronometers and military timing devices to the military, famed early explorers and the general public, and are on record for producing the first waterproof watch called the "All Proof" in 1918. Long associated with the Longines Watch Co. via a U.S. partnership the firm is now owned by Bulova, once a great competitor.
I am very happy to offer for sale the following men's Wittnauer militarywatch, an original, stainless steel case automatic wind</bmodel that dates to the Korean War era (ca 1951 – 1953). Unlike its Longines brothers and sisters (that were typically cased and timed in the USA), this watch was made entirely in Switzerland.
Triple-signed, it measures 40mm end to end and 33mm in width (34.8mm with original, partially recessed steel crown). This works out to be just under1-5/8 inches in total length by just over 1-1/4 inches in width, not counting the winding crown. It is powered by its original and higher-grade 17 jewel, rotor automatic self-winding Wittnauer mechanism that has been fully serviced by my watchmaker David to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time.
The 100% original silver, matte enamel finished dial is in excellent condition, untouched since it left the factory and arguably nicer than the photos portray. It features a 60second outer track border, original radium Arabic numerals, a 24 hour military time inner track, original blue steel hands and a ‘sweep’ original blue steel center seconds hand. Signed WITTNAUER AUTOMATIC below the 24 and SWISS below the 6.
The hardened acrylic crystal is in excellent condition. The all stainless steel case is a two-piece design in excellent PLUS condition – it would be hard to find one cleaner. The original domed steel winding crown (unmarked) is in excellent order as well, winding and setting smoothly.
Turning the watch over I note that the screw-down stainless back lid is free of any engravings and is in excellent shape. Peeking inside I find a clean and higher grade rotor automatic mechanism that is signed Wittnauer Watch Co., Inc – Seventeen 17 Jewels –Grade 11RWK,Swiss, AXA. Below the balance wheel is the caliber number 1256. The inside of the case lid is finely engine turned and stamped WITTNAUER WATCH CO. INC. SWISS – STAINLESS STEEL with case number below.
This watch has been fully disassembled, cleaned, oiled and regulated prior to auction to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time. It is fitted on a new and high quality 17mm black deBeer Paris lizard grain calf leather strap with steel buckle so you’re all set. All in all a well-built, nicely designed and beautifully preserved timepiece –I’ve had a couple similar Wittnauer military models like this before but NEVER with an automatic, self-winding mechanism – it’s truly a rare bird.<p<ulli>Since 1998, Holben's Fine Watches' goal has been happy customers. imgsrc= In its glory years from the 1920s through the 1940s, the Gruen Watch Company of USA & Switzerland was one of the leaders in wristwatch design and quality, even collaborating with Rolex (i.e., the Aegler movement duo-dial doctor’s watch) from its factories in Switzerland. Prior to WWII, Gruen was better known in the USA than Rolex, which at that time was concentrating on the British and Commonwealth countries (hence lots of early Rolexes coming out of Australia and the UK). Hans Wilsdorf and Gruen were friends and neighbors in Switzerland (their factories were just yards away), and even agreed to market their watches as Rolex Gruen in Europe, but the Great Depression (and more urgent matters) prevented this.
I am pleased to offer for sale the following vintage men’s timepiece from Gruen, a Precision series model that dates to the late 1950s (ca 1957 to 1960) and is in excellent original condition. This watch is 14kt Solid Yellow Gold and features a one-piece, hermetic design case and an untouched, 100% original silver enamel finished dial.
Triple-signed, it measures 36.5mm end to end and 30.5mm in width (33mm with winding crown). In inches this works out to be 1-11/16” long by just over 1-3/16” in width, not including the crown. This is a smaller size gent’s watch – albeit a common men’s size in its day (watch sizes have increased dramatically, especially in the last decade). It is ideal for the man who prefers a smaller timepiece or the woman who wants a larger watch. considered My skilled watchmaker David has fully serviced its original 17 jewel, 510 caliber Swiss Gruen mechanism to ensure it is running well and keeping accurate time.
The 100% original silver, matte enamel finished dial is in excellent condition, guaranteed untouched since it left the factory. It features raised gold hour markers, original gold metal Lance-style hands and a recessed seconds dial with engine-turned background and ‘sweep’ gold seconds hand. Signed GRUEN PRECISION below the 12 marker and SWISS at the base of the dial, hard to see in my photos due to the curvature of the crystal.p>Speaking of the crystal, it is (correctly) a hardened acrylicexample in excellent, clear condition. The one-piece case is 14 Karat Solid Yellow Gold and is in excellent PLUS condition, absolutely no flaws. The gold finished winding crown (unmarked like many Gruen models of this era and later) is in excellent shape as well, winding and setting as it should.
Turning the watch over I find a that the back of the case is excellent condition, stamped GRUEN 14K as shown and also WATERPROOF at the opposite end. As this is a one-piece case I had my watchmaker take the photos of the mechanism and inner case markings. The mechanism is stamped Gruen Watch Co., Seventeen 17 Jewels [Caliber] 510, GXC. The inside of the case lid is signed Cased & Timed by Gruen Watch Co., 510-280A.
This cleaned, oiled and regulated wristwatch winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time. It is fitted on a new and high quality 18mm black deBeer Paris lizard (grain) calf leather strap with matching gold finished buckle for a complete package – ready to be worn and enjoyed. While Curvex models always get lots of attention I find the midcentury “Precision” models to be timelessly elegant – this original late ‘50s dress model being no exception.<p<ulli>Since 1998, Holben's Fine Watches' goal has been happy customers. imgsrc=Founded by Aaron Dennison and E. Howard, the highly regarded Waltham Watch Company of Waltham, Mass. is one of the grandfathers of U.S. horology, in business from 1850 to 1959 making high quality pocket watches, clocks and wristwatches known the world over. The company adopted the “American Waltham” name in 1859, having already used such names as Warren, Tracy, Appleton and Boston.
Here’s a strikingly handsome Waltham men’s Officer’s Dial Military watch that dates to just after the great war (1924) and is in great condition. Very nice is the red 12 dial, and engraved bezel something you don’t often seen on American wire lug military watches.
Its hinged-back, 10kt white gold filled 3/0 size case measures36mm from wire lug end to wire lug end and 32mm in width (35mm with winding crown). In inches this works out to be 1-3/8” long by 1-1/4” wide, not including the crown. It is powered by its original American Waltham mechanism that has been fully serviced by my watchmaker David to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time.
The white porcelain enamel dial is in great condition – a couple faint hairlines between the 7 and 8 and above the 4 but no edge chips or damage, it is very nice and shows extremely well (hairlines are very normal for a wrist or pocket watch of this age). It is complete with 60 minute outer track, black enamel Arabic numbers, blue steel spade hands and recessed subsidiary seconds dial with “sweep” seconds hand. Signed Waltham belowthe RED 12.p>The solid glass crystal is in excellent, clear condition. The case is a three-piece 10 Karat White Gold Filled “Victory” model made by the Philadelphia Watch Case Company. It is in excellent shape with a finely engraved bezel and secure wire lugs and hinged back lid. The matching domed winding crown in great condition and, I believe, to be the original for the early, mid 1920s. It winds and sets smoothly.p>Turning the watch over, I note that the back lid is in excellent shape with no wear or engravings, past or present. Peeking inside I find a clean 3/0 size Seven 7 Jewel lever-escapement movement signed A.W.W. Co., Waltham, U.S.A. where the AWW Co. stands for “American Waltham Watch Company.” The serial number is #24,886,771, dating the watch to ca late 1924. The inner back lid is stamped 3/0 – PHILADELPHIA WATCH CASE CO., VICTORY with case number below. A “Victory” case is well documented as being a Gold Filled case – at least 10k gold filled but possibly 14k gold filled.
This watch has been fully serviced to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time. It comes with a new men’s length 14mm oil leather black strap with open ends that fold over the fixed wire lugs, complete with matching color buckle. This band will fit a wrist 6-1/4 inches to 7-1/2 inches around. All in all a very handsome antique watch that is perfect for either a ladies or men’s wrist.<p<ulli>Since 1998, Holben's Fine Watches' goal has been happy customers.
