Fear of God is beginning of wisdom (Pro -1:7). Moreover, Wisdom and knowledge can be

acquired and learnt from a Holy learning centre is known as School.LateRt. Rev. Dr.Jerome M. Fernandez(the first Indian bishop of kollam) said that, “better to construct

a school than a church”. Excellent academic results are the sign of an excellent school. But,the schools in the land of fishermen ; are they excellent? Let us have an close assessment on plus two results for this year-2012.

The above tables and charts speak clearly some important facts and figures. Shall we listen to them, for a while?

Even though the pass percentage is lesser in compare with other areas, this year percentage of Pius XI Higher secondary school, has been increased by 8 from last year to this year. To this improvement, we are obliged to say sincere congratulations! and thanks to the Teachers, Head master, Mr.Dominic savio and Correspondent, vicariate vicar Rev. Fr. John D Bosco for their tireless hard work and commitment.

 Town and city schools have higher pass percentage than village schools. Therefore, now, from coastal line some wealthy and educated parents tend to migrate towards the nearby towns and city to get the best education for their children at the cost of heavy expenditure and other sacrifices and later they would be settled there. If this situation continues, in future fishermen community might be slowly disappeared from the soil of fishfolks.

Interestingly, pass percentages of KollemcodeGovtSchool, SreedeviGirlsSchool and St.FrancisSchool are higher than St.Alosious HSS and Pius HSS. Is it because of non fishermen community? more experienced teachers? well equipped lab facilities? and so on…………. In addition, Pius XI HSS is slightly better than St.Alosious HSS.

Unusually, this year the average subject pass percentage of commerce group is much higher than Maths and Science group. For this mile stone of the results, we appreciate and congratulate two the best teachers of the school, Maaheen sir and Thomas sir. However, they belong to other community their dedicated service to our school is commendable and admirable.

Moreover, in Pius XI Higher secondary school this year the first and second rank holders(Geethu and Sugarna) are from poothurai. Well done! to poothurai parish.

2012 plus two results show that, all over Tamilnadu 2698 students got centum marks in Mathematics. Unfortunately, the pass percentage of maths and science group have gone down miserably inPius XI Higher secondary school. Because of this, students from our community have very rare chance to get admission to medical college, govt engineering colleges and also well reputed private colleges and obviously lose the chance to exploit the privilege of the most backward community from the govt. This is a matter of grave concern, therefore the respective teachers and school management can find the measures to improve the results and reduce the number of failures in the forthcoming year.

Beloved fellow community members,

Life is nothing but trial and error. Let us learn from the past and try to develop ourselves very fast, because fishermen are fast learning and highly adaptable. Our forefathers started to fish with Cattamaran, but now the modern fishermen go for deep sea fishing with advanced crafts and gears. Like that, the ancestors struggled to learn tamil alphabets by using their bare fingers and sitting on the open sandy beach, but current the youngest generation learn English alphabets by using Laptop and smart board in a sophisticated class room. Such a radical and drastic change has come from the community schools and collegeonly through education. Hence, irrespective of the village boundary lines, let us together stretch out helping hands to support our community educational institutions(schools and college) by various ways and means and also respect the teachers to get the best education as much as possible for our future generation as well as sustain mukkuva community on its own traditional land. Former president, Dr.Abdul Kalam told thata student during his school life upto 10+2 spends 25,000 hours in the school campus. His life is, more influenced by the teachers and the school environment. Therefore, the school must have the best of teachers with ability to, teach and love teaching and build moral qualities.

“Think about what we can give for the community,

instead of what we can get from the community”
