P.E. Curriculum and impact of Sports Premium 2015-2016

The girls’ football team

Here at Redland, we try to encourage children to be as active as possible. As a school we are committed to giving all children a varied, exciting and skills based physical education curriculum. This is supported by lots of opportunities to join sports club and take part in competitive events where the game and team skills children have learnt can be applied. Below are the ways in which we provide a successful PE curriculum and utilise the Sport Premium Funding which improves the quality of PE teaching and the PE opportunities available to our children:

P.E. Curriculum

Real PE

All team sports that children participate in will require the fundamentals of movement; agility, balance and coordination. At Redland we follow the ‘Real PE’ scheme which teaches these essential skills to children. These can then be applied to different team sports as children progress through the school. It also teaches the importance of sportsmanship, being part of a team and how to be a successful leader.

Sports Coaching

Twice a year, each class receives coaching from accredited sports company, ‘Up and Under’. The cost of this is paid directly from the Sport Premium Funding. The coach will discuss with the class teacher a sports discipline that they wish to cover and the coach and teacher will work together to plan and deliver lessons. This ensures that our teachers have excellent professional development in delivering lessons and subject knowledge.

Extra-Curricular Sports Clubs

Redland offer a wide range of extra-curricular sports club to our children. During 2014-2015 the clubs we offered included: girls and boys football, hockey, tag rugby, cricket, netball, lacrosse, athletics, cross country and country dancing. The majority of these clubs have been delivered by our own teachers. However, through the Sports Premium Funding we have been able to utilise external sports coaches to work alongside our teachers to improve their professional development and provide excellent teaching of skills to our children. This has enabled more children to take part in competitive sports and encouraged children to take up sports outside of school.

All our clubs are fully subscribed and we try to encourage all children to have a go!

Competitive sports success

We believe it is important that children have the opportunity to engage in competitive sports with other schools. Over the last few years the number of competitions Redland have entered has further increased as has the number of teams entered into some events. Below are achievements in competitive competitions from 2014-2015:

·  Football – level 2 competition – 2nd place

·  Hockey – level 2 competition – winners (qualified for County finals)

·  Tag rugby – level 2 competition winners (qualified for County finals)

·  Tag rugby – level 3 County finals - winners

·  Lacrosse – Wiltshire and Dorset competition – winners (qualified for National finals)

·  Cricket – level 2 competition – 2nd place

P.E master Classes

November 2015 saw 18 Key Stage 1 and 18 Key Stage 2 children taking part in a P.E. Master class with Mr Murphy , our coach from ‘Up and Under Sports,’ and our PE Coordinator. The day was aimed at children who have consistently shown themselves to be able in a number of different sporting disciplines. The objective was for the children to start looking at ways they can improve their performance even further. The morning saw the Key Stage 2 children identifying areas of football they would like to improve in. This involved creating a comprehensive warm up as a group and playing as a team, identifying an area they would like to improve and how that could be achieved.

The afternoon saw the Key Stage 1 children take part in a number of multi-skills activities which required a lot of agility, balance and co-ordination!

All the children had a fantastic time and it was a great learning opportunity for them.

Links with local Secondary schools and other Sporting organisations

As part of the Chippenham cluster of schools our PE Coordinator meets regularly with colleagues from other schools to discuss how best to implement the sport premium, how to measure its impact and to talk about what other opportunities there are for teacher CPD. In addition, these meetings allow us to find out about potential funding for sports that are not normally taught through the curriculum.

Redland has fostered good relations with a number of clubs and organisations which has allowed us to offer our children even more exciting sporting opportunities:

·  Bath Rugby came in and delivered their 6 week ‘On the Front Foot’ programme to our two year 5/6 classes. This involved a weekly PSHE lesson and weekly tag rugby lesson. The children will be taking part in a follow up tag rugby festival before Easter

·  In October 2015 year 5/6 girls took part in the ‘Chance to Shine’ cricket programme

·  In December 2015, 34 lower Key Stage 2 students from Redland took part in a cross country run at our local Secondary schools. They did so with 250 other local primary students from other schools.

·  In March, an upper Key Stage 2 class will be visiting Hardenhuish Secondary school to take part in a trampolining and bouldering lesson with Secondary PE leaders

·  In May/June Biddestone Cricket Club will be delivering a further ‘Chance to Shine’ cricket development programme to Upper Key stage 2.

·  From January-May Bath Lacrosse will be delivering lacrosse lessons to all of Key Stage 2 and Upper Key stage 1.

We look forward to another exciting sporting year at Redland and will continue to provide the children with many opportunities to engage in physical education.
