Overview of the role

With first-hand experience of managing relationships and ideally of grantmaking and fundraising in London or elsewhere, your role will involve the management and growth of existing donor funds, grant assessment, programme design and support on new business development.

To this end, you will have your own portfolio of funds to manage as well as supporting the delivery of programmes across The London Community Foundation that are managed by your colleagues. You will also be working directly with the Deputy CEO/Director of Programmes on the development of new business, as required. This work will centre on proposal writing and liaison with potential prospects.

With unprecedented drops in public spending, public awareness has never been higher or the impact of austerity measures on London’s most vulnerable. At the same time, the attention on philanthropy is highlighting the role that ‘giving’ can play in strengthening communities and achieving social change. Key Deliverables

  1. To lead and manage a number of grant making funds and donor relationships, acting as the main contact with donors.
  1. To nurture donor relations to enable the retention, renewal and growth of funds, and with the aim of growing certain funds within your portfolio by 5-20% per year
  1. To support the Deputy CEO/Director of Programmes, CEO and other members of the team in new business development activities including bid and proposal writing across a variety of prospect categories
  1. To take responsibility for designing and developing grant programmes and programme strategies in accordance with donor wishes, community needs and the Foundation’s own strategies where relevant
  1. To manage a portfolio of grant programmes and their implementation, including the grantmaking process, with support from team members and the Head of Programmes and Grant Operations.
  1. To build personal networks, knowledge of boroughs, organisations, community and third sector issues and policy. To utilise this knowledge and relations to shape programme strategies, inform grant decisions and secure further funds
  1. To undertake the assessment of applications, with support from Programme and Monitoring Managers, External Assessors and other members of the team
  1. To take responsibility for managing donor and community panels, including recruiting and training panel members where appropriate
  1. To continually monitor and review grant programmes structures according to community need, donor’s wishes, taking into account changing environment, local issues and policy.
  1. To monitor grant programmes outcomes and develop monitoring frameworks in order to provide comprehensive reporting to donors and maximising the Foundation’s impact
  1. To manage all grant programmes and the distribution of funds, in an intelligent, fair, transparent and effective way
  1. To manage budgets for multiple grant programmes, keeping accurate financial records, authorising payments in accordance with the Foundation’s procedures, and liaising with the Senior Management Team on annual budgets for each programme
  1. Representing the Foundation at community meetings, events, seminars and at donor meetings, developing relations with external partners, networks and support agencies
  1. Through all tasks, to help increase the profile of the Foundation as a hub for community giving, philanthropy, and as a supportive, approachable and responsive funder

Key Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Previous programme and grant management experience with demonstrably strong analytical skills in grant assessment*
  • Significant experience of relationship management with donors *
  • Experience of fundraising or fund development*
  • Understanding and knowledge of the voluntary sector
  • Experience of developing programme or funding strategies
  • Strong communication and presentation skills, both verbal and written – with the ability to adapt to different audiences
  • Proven ability to influence and negotiate
  • Ability to make consistent decisions, show maturity and strength of character
  • Ability to process information accurately, write succinct reports and work to deadlines
  • An understanding of budgeting, financial accountability and reporting
  • Proficiency with IT and computer based information systems
  • Experience of or demonstrated potential to raise new funds for LCF
  • Undergraduate degree (second class or above)

*We are ideally looking for candidates that have experience in all of these areas (i.e. grant programme management, fundraising and donor relationship management). We are however willing to consider candidates with significant experience in one area and less experience in another, but who can demonstrate an appetite, skills and competencies to develop in the second area.
