Overview of position

As a trustee you will sit on the highest governing board of the Students’ Union overseeing the financial, staffing and governance structures. Sitting alongside the four Sabbatical officers plus experienced external trustees, you will be involved in formal discussions about the future of the Students’ Union and its current status.

Responsibilities / How will you do it
  • Be a Trustee of Arts SUthrough the attendance of 6 meetings in a year, responsible for the financial & legal running of the organisation
  • Contribute actively to help the Board of Trustees reach sound decisions through preparation before meetings.
  • Act as an advocate of the Students’ Union by suggesting ideas that students want to see improved and can be implements by Arts SU through their strategy.
  • Be aware of trends in the wider student movement to help decision making of the board.
Collectively as the Trustee Board:
  • Have ultimate responsibility for the financial & legal matters of Arts SU.
  • Ensure that Arts SU is solvent, well governed and delivering on the objectives for which it exists.
  • Direct the strategy of Arts SU, guiding current work & future direction.
  • Appoint other members of the Trustee Board when vacancies arise.

  • Suggest ideas about things students want to see improved, either that Arts SU could implement, or that the Union should be strategically thinking about.
  • Attend Trustee Board Meetings (no more than 6 times per year)
  • Prepare for Trustee Board Meetings & any other meetings as required
  • Keep in touch with trends of the wider student movement
  • Uphold the decisions of the Trustee Board
Collectively as the Trustee Board:
  • Monitor the legal responsibilities of Arts SU as a charity
  • Work on achieving consensus decision making in meetings of the Trustee Board
  • Communicate & listen to the membership on a regular basis.

Time commitment / Eligibility
  • If elected you will hold the post from 1 July 2018 to 30 June 2019. You will be required to attend training prior to this date. There are 6 trustee meetings throughout the year which you will attend.
  • Meetings will take place in our main offices in High Holborn.

  • Anyone who is currently a UAL student and will be in 2018/19 is eligible to apply.
  • No previous experience is required, but lots of enthusiasm and willingness to learn is essential
