Job Purpose:
To lead and undertake research in line with the research strategies of the Academic Unit in general, and the Global Environmental Change and Earth Observation Group (GECEO) in particular;to enhance the research profile of the University of Southampton through undertaking internationally leading research, obtaining substantial research funding from diverse sources, and supervising research staff and students; to contribute to the development and delivery of high quality teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level; to participate in the administration of the Academic Unit as directed by the HoAU;to provide academic leadership.
Key Accountabilities/Primary Responsibilities
Research
  • Plan and lead research activities of outstanding quality and national/international repute in a major subject area. This will involve developing and making a leading contribution to collaborative partnerships with other HEIs or external bodies.
  • Overseeing staff teams and resource management processes necessary to deliver research plans.
  • Lead major funding bids which develop and sustain research support for the specialist area and which advance the reputation of the Academic Unit and the University.
  • Lead the process of acquiring, analysing and interpreting research data and information, ensuring appropriate techniques, approaches, models and methods are selected, developed or devised for the purpose.
  • Secure the publication of key results in leading peer-reviewed international journals, conferences, exhibitions etc., which further develop an already sustained individual and team reputation in the subject area
Education
  • Develop and deliver a range of collaborative teaching and assessment including lectures, practicals, supervisions and fieldwork according to the post-holder’s subject specialism, to enable the AU’s teaching objectives to be met.
Administration
  • Contribute to the effective management and administration of the Academic Unit by performing duties allocated by the Head of Academic Unit. Such duties may include leading a research group or centre, or otherwise being involved in the leadership and management of the Academic Unit.

Internal & External Relationships: (nature & purpose of relationships)
  • The postholder will be a member of the AU Examination Board and of such AU committees as relevant to their assigned administrative duties. Research priorities will be agreed within the strategic framework of the research theme of which they are a member (Global Environmental Change and Earth Observation). Teaching and administrative duties will be allocated by the Head of Academic Unit, within the context of the teaching programmes agreed by the Academic Unit Programme Board.
