Minnesota Ovarian Cancer Alliance Plans 13th Annual Silent No More Walk/Run

(MINNEAPOLIS, MINN.,August 8, 2012)The Minnesota Ovarian Cancer Alliance (MOCA) is preparing for the 13th Annual Silent No More Walk/Run for Ovarian Cancer on Saturday, Sept. 8 at Rosland Park in Edina, Minn. MOCA is a Minnesota non-profit dedicated to raising awareness and funding research needed to detect ovarian cancer early and treat it properly.

The Silent No More Walk/Run is Minnesota’s largest fundraising event for ovarian cancer, raising more than $200,000 for ovarian cancer research and programming and attracting more than 3,000 peopleeach year. Many participants form teams and fundraise in honor or in memory of a loved one. KARE 11 anchor Rena Sarigianopoulous is once again the Walk/Run emcee.

MOCA is one of the top non-profit, private funders of ovarian cancer research in the nation. The group has provided more than $3 million for ovarian cancer research in Minnesota.

“Because there is no test for ovarian cancer, MOCA works to educate women and medical professionals about the symptoms, provide support to women and families impacted by ovarian cancer and also raise money for research,” said Kathleen Gavin, MOCA Executive Director. “The funds raised through the Silent No More Walk/Run help provide a future of hope for Minnesota women.”

September is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, which will be recognized via a proclamation from Governor Dayton. As part of MOCA’s awareness efforts, MOCA will be launching their new Tie it Teal public awareness campaign during September. As part of Tie it Teal, MOCA is selling teal shoelaces to get people talking about the symptoms of ovarian cancer.

In addition to more than 50 Minnesota youth sports teams committed to wearing the laces in September, MOCA has involved the Minnesota Twins, Saint Paul Saints and Rochester Honkers in the Tie it Teal campaign. Many individuals and teams at the Walk/Run are planning to wear Tie it Teal laces to show support and awareness. Laces can be purchased via the MOCA Store link at

“The Silent No More Walk/Run is an event that brings out our many supporters from Minnesota and throughout the Midwest,” said Lisa Barnholdt, MOCA Board of Directors President and Silent No More Walk/Run co-chair. “Whether you’re part of a team or an individual walking for yourself or a loved one, there’s a sea of support for survivors, friends and family at the event.”

The Silent No More Walk/Run for Ovarian Cancer begins at 7:30 a.m. Participants can choose between a 5K run or 2K walk; teams and individuals can register online at Youth participants can also register for a 1K Kids Fun Run. Early bird registration of $25 for adults runs through August 27. Registration fees between Aug. 27 and the morning of Sept. 8 are $30. Bottled water and snacks will be provided. Teal level sponsors of the Silent No More Walk/Run include Clear Software for Good, Downtowner Car Wash, Lessing Flynn, Mayo Clinic and University of Minnesota Physicians.
