Attendees: Judge Dennis D. Yule, Chairperson;Ms. Patricia C. Lally; Ms. Rosa M. Melendez;and Monto Shan Morton as Staff.

  1. Sub-committee Membership and Recruitment
  1. Judge Dennis D. Yule, Chairperson, welcomed Ms. Patricia C. Lally to the Commission and the Outreach Sub-committee.
  1. The Sub-committee discussed other possible recommendations for membership to the Commission and the Outreach Sub-committee. Some minority bar members and judges of color were mentioned. It was requested that sub-committee members submit recommendations for discussion at the breakout session at the June 19, 2009 Commission Meeting.

  1. Spring 2009Equal Justice Newsletter – Judge Yule asked Mr. Morton to update the Sub-committee members on the progress of the 2009Spring Equal Justice Newsletter. Mr. Morton reported that several community organizations have submitted news articlesfor the spring newsletter. Ms. Patricia C. Lally stated that she will look into submitting news concerning the Latino/a Bar Association’s new free legal clinic. Judge Yule stated that he will help with the editing of the newsletter; however, he will be unavailable from June 1 thru 12, 2009.
  1. 2009 Annual Report – The Sub-committee discussed how to establish a more contemporary and a cost effective way in which to design the 2009 Annual Report. It was decided that the Sub-committee will determine whether the Seattle Community College and/or Seattle Art Institute could sponsor a design competition to develop a contemporary design of the annual reportand/or its cover art based on a theme determined by theSub-committee. Ms. Rosa M. Melendez volunteered to look into this matter. The Sub-committee members agreed to submit recommendations for annual report themes for review during the Sub-committee’s breakout session at the June 19, 2009 Commission Meeting.
  1. Outreach Activities
  1. Information Network – The Sub-committee members discussed organizations and agencies in which information will be requested for the Equal Justice Newsletter. It was decided that the community outreach list would be provided to sub-committee members for their review. It was also requested that sub-committee members submit recommendations to be add to the outreach list, which will be reviewed and discussed at the next Commission meeting breakout session.
  1. Commission Meeting Reception (June 19, 2009) – Mr. Morton reported that a reception for retired Justice Charles Z. Smith will be held after the Commission Meeting on the Sullivan Hall 2nd Floor Gallery at the Seattle University School of Law. The sub-committee members discussed who to invite to the reception and determined that the presidents of the minority bar associations, Supreme Court Justices, and former Commission members should be invited. If possible TV-W will be asked to cover speeches presented at the reception. It was also determined that Mr. John C. Hughes, chief historian for The Legacy Project,who conducted the interviews of Justice Smith for Oral History, will be asked to speak at the reception.
