emotional,andspiritualneeds.Perhapsthesepeoplemightbeourneighborsorevenourfamily.They maybe people we alreadyknow in some way.Theymay be those with whomourpathswouldnevercrossotherwise.

ForIwashungryandyougavemesomethingtoeat.Iwasthirstyandyougavemesomethingtodrink.Iwasastrangerandyouinvitedmein.Ineededclothesandyouclothedme.Iwassickandyoulookedafterme.Iwasinprisonandyoucametovisitme…Itellyouthetruth,whateveryoudidforoneoftheleastofthesebrothersofmine,youdidforme. Matthew25:35-40.

Outreachmaybeassimpleasshowinghospitalitytoaneighbor you don’t knowor ascomplicatedastravelingtoa third-worldcountry tofeed thepoor.It isa naturaloverflow of Christ’sloveforusandinus,awitnessofthefaithwithinus.Itisastatementthatwewillnolongerignoretheneedsofthosearoundus;thatwewillnolongerpretendthatalliswell.Itisrealizingthatwecannotbecontentwithsimplysayingtherightwordswithoutalsoextendingahandtohelp.

Itisdifficulttoreachouttosomeonewithouttouchingtheminsomeway.Outreachisintentionallyandpurposefullyreachingouttoleaveanimprintonsomeone’slife–animprintthatlookslikeChrist’slovefromawoman’shand.

Outreachis:

  • Sharinglives. Focusing on relationships.
  • Hospitalitythatextendsbeyondyourhome(theGreekwordforhospitalityisdefinedas“loveforstrangers”)
  • ExpectingGodtodogreatthingsasyoureachouttoothers
  • AnaturaloverflowofChrist’sloveforusandinus- theloveofChristiswhat

The Gospelsarefullof storiesofJesusteaching,preaching,healing,andfeedingthoseinneed.We“reachout”becausewearestrivingtobelikeJesus.Hecameproclaiming,butalsodemonstrating.Hewashands-on,eventhoughHewastheSonofGod.HewasaKingwhocouldhaveexpectedanddemandedserviceforHimself,butinstead,theloveofGodformankindwassocleartoHimandsuchapartofwhoHewasthatservicetootherswasanaturaloutpouringfromHim.Itwasn’tsomethinghehadtodobecauseofWhoHewas,butitwassomethingHewantedtodobecauseofWhoseHewas. Likewise,weshouldn’tthinkofreachingouttoothersassomethingwehavetodo…itshouldbeanaturaloverflowofChrist’sloveforusandinus.IfHewasn’ttoobusyortoopowerfulortooimportanttoreachouttoandtouchhisfellowman,howcanwebe?

“I’mtoobusy”mayreallymean,“Iamafraid,”“Idon’tunderstand,”“Ifeelinadequate”oreven“myprioritiesareoutoforder.”Nomatterhowbusy

weare,eachofuscandosomething,howeversmallitmayseem.

SomeChallenges

Reachingouttootherbelieversdoesn’tpresentmuchofaproblem.It’swhenwehaveto getoutsideourcomfortzoneandreachouttostrangersthatitgetsdifficult.Thisisnothing new.Accordingtoscripture,eventheapostlesmayhavehadtroubleleavingthecomfortofJerusalem,althoughJesushadinstructedthemto“gotoJudeaandSamariaandtheendsoftheearth.”Atthesametime,todayperhapsmorethanever,peoplearecautiousaboutacceptingreligiousmessages.


Thisgenerationmaybe thoughtful,evenhungry,butheorsheisalsocynicalandcautious.Heorshehasbeenliedtobythemedia,bypoliticians,andifheorsheisachildofdivorce,evenbyparents.Heorshewillvigorouslyrejectanythingthatsmacksofhypeorcliché.Wewillhavetowalkalongsideslowlyandsensitivelytogainahearing.

HOWTOREACHOUTTOANUNBELIEVER

John4:1-16recordshowJesusreachedouttothewomanatthewell.Wecanfollowthesamepatterninreachingouttounbelievers.

HeWenttoWhereSheWas.John4:4says,“NowHehadtogothroughSamaria.”InactualityHedidn’tHAVEtogothroughSamaria.MostJewsdideverythingtheycouldtokeepfromtravelingthroughSamariabecauseoftheprejudicetheyhadtowardtheSamaritans.However,Jesus’lifewasn’truledbyprejudice.TheroutethroughSamariawasshortersoHetookit.Besides,Samariawaswherehewouldsurelyfindanunbeliever.Likewise,ifwearetoreachouttounbelievers,wehavetomeetthemwheretheyareratherthanwaitingforthemtocometous.Thatmaymeanthatwehavetoventurefromournormalcircleoffriendsandtheplaceswefeelmostcomfortablegoing.

HisLifeTouchedHers.WhentheSamaritanwomencametodrawwater,JesusaskedhertogiveHimadrink.Itisvirtuallyimpossibletodo effectiveoutreachfromadistance.

He SawHer Need.He toldher the circumstances of her life and thatsheneeded living water.To outreach, we must look beyond the unbeliever’s apparent circumstances to what is lacking in their lives.

HeSpokeTruthinLove.Hetoldherthatisshedrankthelivingwatershewouldneverbethirstyagain.HeintroducedhertoTheMessiah.Withoutcondemnationorjudgment,wecanintroduceanunbelievertotheTruththatwillsetthemfree.

HeAllowedHertoPuttheAnswersTogetherforHerself.Jesusdidn’tforceHimselforHismessageontothewomanatthewell.Hespoketruthandshowedcompassionandlove.TheSamaritanwomandeterminedforherself thatshehadmetTheMessiahandwasforeverchanged.Consequently,becauseofwhatotherssawinherlife,theywantedtoknowmoreaboutJesus.Likewise,wemustrememberthatisituptoGod,notustochangepeople.

Matthew22:37-39says,“LovetheLordyourGodwithallyourheartandwithallyoursoulandwithallyourmind.Thisisthefirstandgreatestcommandment.Andthesecondislikeit.Loveyourneighborasyourself.AllthelawandtheProphetshangonthese2commandments.”

SodoesOutreach.Theorderoftheseversesisofutmostimportance.First,wearetoloveGod.Thenwearetoloveourneighbor.Howcanwepossiblyknowhowtoloveourneighborifwedon’tfirstloveGod?IfweloveGodfirst,hewillshowushowtoloveothers,whichfreesusfromourownlimitations.

Accept that God Can Use You toDo the Work of HisKingdom

WhomGodcalls, Hewillequip. Allhe wantsfromyouis for you tobe availableand yieldedtoHim.

Theirownnaturalinterestsmayleadthemintherightdirection.Oncetheygetoutthere,encouragethemtogetinvolvedinpeople’slives– tofindout

OurmilitaryandextendedcommunitiesneedChristianwomen.Yet,manytimesChristianwomenarehesitanttobecomeinvolvedinacommunityfunctionbecauseit’snotaChristianactivity.Withincertainconstraints,that’sexactlywhereweneedtobe,andthat’sexactlywhyweneedtobethere,providedthatwe’reequippedtobethere.

PLANNINGANDORGANIZATION

AstheOutreachChairperson,youshouldobtaincompleteinformationaboutprojectsbeforeproposingthemtotheboard.WorkcloselywiththeProgramandSpiritualLifeleaderstocoordinatethetimingofoutreachprojectswithactivitiesofProgramsandBiblestudies.Involveasmanyparticipantsaspossible,andencourageindividualservice.Overseetheimplementationofprojects,beginningwiththerequestingoffundsthroughthePresidentandChaplainAdvisor.Itisyourjobtocoordinateallcurrentprojects,guideshorttermactivities,followuponlong-termprojectsandseethattheiroriginalaimsandpurposesarefulfilled.

SUGGESTIONSANDCAUTIONS

Beforeplanningoutreachactivities,ministries,events,etc.,evaluate:

1.Didyoupray?DidyouhonestlyandsincerelyseekGod’swillandguidance beforebeginningyourplan?IsitHisplanoryours?Isitjustagoodthing,orisitaGodthing?

2.DidyougettheinputofyourboardandotherPWOCparticipants?Aretheysupportiveandinagreement?Don’tacceptanyprojectunless youhavefullapprovalof yourboard.If yourboardapprovesofandsupportstheoutreachproject,thebodywillusuallyfollow.

3.Isyourbodyinshape?Wouldtheoutreachproject“stretch”themwisely,orcauseyourPWOCbodytogobeyondwhatitiscurrentlyinshapetodo?Isyourbodycomposedprimarily ofmatureChristianwomen,orarethere many immature Christians?Hasthegroupbeen“burned-outandused-up”bymilitarydeploymentsandfamilysituations?Doesitneedtobeministeredtobeforeitcanminister?WouldyourbodyservewithapositiveChristianwitnessandministry?

  3. Giftsshouldbesmall,nottoexceed$5.Cardsandnotesofencouragementmaymeanmoretothesecretsisterthanagift.
  4. Secretsistersshouldberememberedonce-a-month,minimum.

  • BibleStudyGroupsforYoungFamilies–Theremaybeanareawheretherearemothershomewithyoungchildrenduringtheday.Thiscouldbecombinedwithacoffeetobeginwithandgettingthepeopletotalkabouttheneedstheyseeintheircommunityaswellaswhattheywouldliketobeabletodoorseedone.
  • RetiredPersons/SeniorCitizens–TAPTHEIRRESOURCES.Thishasbeenandstillisanuntappedgroup.Thesepeoplehavealotofexpertise,know-how,experience,andabilitythatshouldbesharedwithothers.Gettoknowthisgroupofpeopleinyourgroupandcommunity.Findoutwhattheirstrengthsandabilitiesare.Thenlookattheneedsofthecommunityanddeterminehowyoumightmatchthesetwothings.Thisgroupwantsandneedstobeneededjustlikeotheragegroups,andtheyoftenhavetoomuchtimeontheirhands.

  • FocusonJesus,notonyourstrengths.Itisnotreallyaboutyou,butaboutChristinyou.
  • AskGodtoshowyouhowHehasworkedinyourlife.Sometimeswedon’tevenrecognizethegreatestthingsGodhasdoneinourlives.UsetheinsightHegivesyoutowriteyourstory.
  • Trytotellyourstoryasifyou’resharingitwithoneotherperson.Itwillmakeyourtestimonyseemmoreintimateanddirect.
  • AvoidChristianterminology.Unbelieversmaynotimmediatelyunderstandwhatitmeanstobe“saved.”TheywillunderstandifyoutellthemhowJesushaschangedyourlifeandwhatadifferenceHehasmadeinyourlife.
