FIRE TECHNICIAN II: Type 2IA Squad Leader

Salary Range: $14.81 - $22.24

NOTE: Exact salary will be determined by qualification and experiences speak with the hiring official for more information.

Assignment location: UT-NWS based out of Draper, Utah

The Position and Duties:

The Utah Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands (UT-FFSL) is seeking candidates to apply for Twin

Peaks Type 2 Initial Attack squad leader position(s). Quality candidates will be physically fit, disciplined individuals who have demonstrated the ability to contribute to a team environment while leading and motivating firefighters. The successful candidate(s) will have day-to-day working leadership responsibility for 5-10 squadmembers in a variety of settings including wildland fire, natural resource management and fuels mitigation projects, formal and on-the-job training duties, physical fitness conditioning, power saw, pump, chipper and vehicle operations. Other duties include activities such as personnel evaluations, timekeeping, billing and credit card reconciliation and use of Windows based computer software.

The successful candidate will practice effective risk management in all operations and activities and will contribute to a culture that prioritizes safety in all crew undertakings.

Crew Overview:

Twin Peaks was formed in 2004 and is staffed with one benefitted full time year round crew supervisor, 3

benefitted permanent seasonal squad leaders and 17 seasonal crewmembers. Twin Peaks is nationally available for dispatch by the Northern Utah Interagency Fire Center beginning in early May through late October each season. Twin Peak’s primary purpose and function is incident support, mainly wildland fire. When not assigned to incident support, the crew completes a variety of natural resource management and fuels mitigation projects in the state of Utah on a 40 hour per week schedule while maintaining on-call for incident support. These projects often involve self supported camping near project sites.

Facilities:

Twin Peaks is based out of Lone Peak Conservation Center in Draper, Utah. Office operations are

centered in headquarters complete with two state of the art training/briefing rooms. Our base also includes two other office buildings, 100-person cache, saw shop, gym and buildings for vehicle storage. There are two locker rooms which aid seasonal crewmembers with gear storage and security of personal and issued gear.

Location and Accommodations:

Government housing is not available however the surrounding area provides many options. Utah is the

fifth most affordable state in the nation with an average cost of living 10% below the national average and housing costs, including apartment rentals 15% below the national average. Lone Peak Conservation Center is located in the city of Draper, a suburb of Salt Lake City. Draper is roughly 20 miles south of downtown. Salt Lake and the surrounding vicinity have a population of about

1.2 million people. The elevation is around 4,300 feet. The area typically receives 16 inches of rain and around 62 inches of snow annually. The average high temperature is 90 degrees in the summer and the average low is 20 degrees in the winter.
