The Cleveland National Forest will soon be advertising a GS-0499-05 Student Trainee position with a target position of Forestry Tech GS-0462-5; position is located at the Cleveland National Forest, Palomar Ranger District, Ramona, California. Brief Description of Duties:
This Pathways Internship Program position is located on a Forest Service unit. The incumbent serves as a Student Intern with the responsibility of performing routine field and office work in support of the unit’s recreation and trails management programs. These duties are performed as part of required on-the-job training in conjunction with scholastic training at an accredited educational institution as it pertains to permanent recreation and trails management positions in the Forest Service.
Performs duties which primarily focus on providing work and training experience to prepare the student intern for a more advanced, permanent professional or technical recreation/trails management position through a variety of tasks that utilize established processes, methods, and procedures that include the following assignments and responsibilities: i.e. maintaining developed recreation sites and trails.

ABOUT THE FOREST:
The Cleveland National Forest, one of 18 National Forests in the State, is the southern-most National Forest in California. It is divided into Descanso, Palomar and Trabuco regional districts and is located in the counties of San Diego, Riverside, and Orange. The Cleveland National Forest is 460,000 acres in size and extends from within 5 miles of the Mexico border and moves northward 130 miles to Orange County

Ramona is 36 miles northeast of San Diego in the foothills of the Cuyamaca Mountains. Just over the mountains is the Anza Borrego desert, playground for the camping enthusiast. Also known as Valley of the Sun, Ramona boasts clean, clear air and glorious days of sunshine and gentle breezes. With Lake Poway, Lake Sutherland, Lake Cuyamaca and Lake Henshaw, watersports and fishing are a focal point here.

Interns Program: The Internship Program is for current students. It replaces the Student Career Experience Program (SCEP) and Student Temporary Employment Program (STEP). The new Internship Program provides students in high schools, colleges, trade schools and other qualifying educational institutions with paid opportunities to work in agencies and explore Federal careers while completing their education.
Eligibility: Current students in an accredited high school, college (including 4-year colleges/universities, community colleges, and junior colleges); professional, technical, vocational, and trade school; advanced degree programs; or other qualifying educational institution pursuing a qualifying degree or certificate.
Program Completion and Conversion:
· Interns may be converted to a permanent position (or, in some limited circumstances, to a term position lasting 1-4 years) within 120 days of successful completion of the program.
· To be eligible for conversion, Interns must:
· Complete at least 640 hours of work experience acquired through the Internship Program
· Complete their degree or certificate requirements
· Meet the qualification standards for the position to which the Intern will be converted
· Meet agency-specific requirements as specified in the Participant's Agreement, and
· Perform their job successfully.
· Selected to ensure that the employee receives on-the-job training and exposure to one or more program functions.
