Introduction to Turner Contemporary

At Turner Contemporary, we believe in the power of art to transform people and places, doing things differently to achieve our vision Art Inspiring Change.

Since opening in 2011, Turner Contemporary has become one of the most successful galleries in the UK. We’ve welcomed more than 2 million visits and the gallery has been a catalyst for the regeneration of Margate. Located in a stunning building on a site overlooking the North Sea, our programme of world-class exhibitions of historical and contemporary art has fast earned the gallery an international reputation. With free admission, great art is accessible for all.

We can only achieve our vision by having great people working with us.

We are looking for a freelance Learning Coordinator who shares our vision that art transforms people and places to coordinate learning activities for our Pudding Pan Island project.

About the Project

Our planned activity centres on an exciting collaboration with The British Museum, which brings to life the story of Pudding Pan Island. This island – visible from Turner Contemporary’s Clore Learning Studio – was the site of the wreck of a Roman vessel packed with pottery. Over time, particularly during the 18th century, Roman pots from the shipwreck were dredged up by fisherman along the North-east Kent coast and were used for cooking. Turner Contemporary will exhibit 12 of these Roman pots this Autumn and have commissionedartist Hannah Lees to make new work in response to this story.

This project focusses on the local history of the area, presenting an ideal opportunity to support cross-curricular educational work including Roman history, trade routes and map reading in Geography, pottery-making in Art and Design and creative responses in English and Drama.

Purpose of job/ key objectives

We are seeking a freelance Learning Co-ordinator to manage an exciting outreach project with local schools, as part of Children and the Arts Start Programme – making cultural venues accessible to new generations.

Working with five schools from the Coastal Alliance (a group of sixteen schools within Reculver, Herne Bay and Whitstable) the gallery is delivering an outreach project to engage them with the exhibition by supporting cross-curricular educational work which will take place within the schools and at the gallery.

The Learning Co-ordinator will:

  • Manage members of our learning team who will deliver workshops in schools linked to the exhibition.
  • Manage three gallery workshop and showcasing days for students across the participating schools during the course of the project.
  • Build the galleries partnerships between other cultural organisations and the participating schools.
  • Be responsible for all administration relating to the project, including budget management, project planning, achieving key milestones and reporting.
  • Make recommendations for our future work, and how this initiative might grow both at Turner Contemporary and in other venues.
